What makes you feel at home?

I have this old dish towel that I got from my parents. It was around...

Gardening. My grandpa was the only person I felt real close to most of my life. He was always there and took me out to the garden with him. And anything related to him.

Seeing the birds while waiting for the bus out front of the building I live in. Cardinals almost always come out and search for food in the lawns. I love seeing them. They are my favorite bird!

Crisp white freshly laundered cotton, embroidery, my garden, my clean house, cooking good food, a tight hug from my partner, laughter, candles, a hot soak in the bath, clean clothes.

These are things I didn't have as a kid, so ' home ' to me is what I have made, not from fond memories as a kid.

I have both fond memories from childhood and some that are from my married years (my husband passed away in 2005) and then some I have come up with since then. I have had this mad urge to get a small animal like a hamster for awhile now. I used to have them as pets when I was a kid. However, the last time I tried to have one, as an adult, it died about 4 days after I bought it. In a depressed state, I threw out its cage and gave up. Now I wish I had that cage, so I could put one into it, but the trouble is, that they are not tame as they were when you bought them when I was a kid. You have to train them and it takes a lot of patience and time. But then if I end up in the hospital or something, who would take care of the little fellow? I live alone now.... so I have no hamster. So far anyway. I'm still pondering the whole situation. I have to speak with my Power of Attorney. Maybe, if I were hospitalized, she and her son (aged around 12) might be willing to care for it. I have an aquarium, something that also makes me feel at home, because we had them as kids. She is willing to take care of it, if I am away, so why not a hamster too? All I have to do is ask. Then I have to save up some money for the cage and the hamster. We shall see....

@SheilaKathy ......maybe you could have a word with the local vet who maybe able to advise on any local charities or anyone they know who can help in such circumstances?

I unfortunately have no Craigslist nearby here, since I live W-A-Y out in the country. We only have one pet shop near here and it is about 15 miles from here. I have to call them and find out how much a cage would be, I suppose. Then I can start saving....

A fire. I lit my fire again today. Nice and warm. Well, it would be if the 2 cats and 2 dogs would move so I can get some heat.

During the holidays, things that make me feel at home are my small 2' Christmas tree with a few gifts under it, Christmas cards hanging on my kitchen doorway on some lace I have there, with cloths pins holding them, friends coming to visit bringing gifts, friends coming to take me to their houses to visit (so I can bring them gifts), boxes of tissues everywhere (my nose runs during the colder months a lot) and my fav radio station, wsmc.org Classical commercial free!
