University accommodations

After 2+ years of having PTSD I finally got up the nerve to ask for accommodations for it from my Uni (I'm a first year). I didn't think I was being unreasonable... I asked if I could get a day or two extension on assignments when I needed it due to PTSD symptoms.
The lady at the disability center said she couldn't give this to me without me telling her why I had PTSD, so I told her: getting molested for ~5 years when I was younger + being raped by a stranger when I was in hs & the police investigations/ fall out from both... however that wasn't enough I guess. She said she could give me an accommodation for "reasonable extensions" but I would have to meet with each professor to work out specifics and they didn't have to give me the accommodation/ extension if it wasn't convenient for them or just "didn't fit in with the class".

Anyways... not sure what the point of all that was but I'm just really annoyed. I do well in school when symptoms are going okay but sometimes when it has been a week of nightmares, flashbacks, disassociation, panic attacks, and brain fog I just can't...

That really sucks. At my uni we have reasonable adjustments which is like your accomodations I think? I had to get a letter from my local GP stating what my disabilities were and how they affected me and suggested adjustments that could be made. I'm not sure if that might help? It makes it more official I guess.

Hope you get something sorted. I know for me my symptoms skyrocket around test and exam times.

I don't know if it varies from state to state but I don't think the disability lady was accurate with her advice or requirements. You may need to provide proof that you have the disorder via letter from a doctor. You don't have to give a detailed explanation to her. Sexual abuse and assault is good enough. Also, it's her job to mandate to the professors that you need accommodating. What the accommodation looks like might differ but they can't refuse. It is a federal mandate. You have a federally recognized disability.

Good grief. She should be fired.

@jael is right!

Thanks so much! The type of accommodations you have are what I was looking for (although was unsuccessful).
I might meet with her to try again...

She should have explained the process better.

You'll need documentation from your doc and your doc will need to explain each requested accommodation and why you need it.

This is NOT state stuff. This is federal level ADA stuff that every institution of higher learning must abide by. I think public institutions may be better at following the law to the "T" though.

Man, that's way too wrong what she said. Just go to the ADA Accessability counselor with a letter from your doctor. Then when she asks about what you need, tell her what you want for accommodations. You have nothing to explain to her or anyone.
