Unprovoked Crying

Sometimes I like to congratulate myself when I feel a particular emotion or cry at something which I think is appropriate. After all the years of crying/not crying/feeling lots of emotions/feeling numb, in response to either trauma-type stuff or just normal everyday things, I actually feel like I have achieved something when my emotions seem to get it right!! So if I cry because I see a weepy film, or because someone has upset me or whatever, I cheer myself up by thinking how my emotional system seems to be responding appropriately and must therefore be getting better! I don't know if that makes any sense to anyone, but it helps me feel better about myself sometimes!

Best wishes all, KB

I wasn't really a cryer until recently. At first it was probably anxiety related, but then it seemed like it was more of a symptom of my most recent serious depression. When I cried regularly, it wasn't soothing or relieving, it seemed to me more painful. I think maybe that's the difference in crying for healing and processing and crying out of depression. With the depression, I just burst into tears over anything and nothing really gave me relief. Now, after getting the depression somewhat stabilized, my crying has more to do with processing.

I'm not sure of a better way to explain it. It's weird, huh. I guess if it feels like it's helping you feel better, then that's good.

With healing,

When my dad died I really cried. My cousin told me to take it like a man and let mom mourn, but I couldn't. How dare them tell me when I can and cannot cry.

I also experience periods of blocked tears and periods of 'flooding'. It's natural as defences shift and move to have this, I believe.

I have also experienced the crying at the drop of a hat thing. My therapist says it is part of healing, so I try to not berate myself so much for it.
