Very, Very Important

I am also an IT guru. From what I know about the VA computer systems, they are aware that a hacker can get into their intranet. In order to continue daily service with minimal interruption they rely heavily on Tracking who is viewing files. Until they can patch the system to keep others out. My big problem is that once on there network you can view all files. For example a receptionist can view your secure messages and past medical records. The VA grants low level employees with far to many network privileges. The problem is that it takes time and money to fix these problems. Putting these problems out to the press just let's thiefs know where the easy target is.

I don't think they are stealing I.D's at all, I think they are just recording information there for proof of who you are.

Think about it like this. What if someone stole your VA card and duplicated it with a photo of them on it. They would have access to drugs and all sorts of stuff. But if they don't know your Social Security Number they are stuffed. Just look at it like a fail safe, but just be wary that people can scan it if you leave it lying around. What they have done is not wrong, the way they went about it is wrong. They should have encrypted the info.

One day we will all live with a barcode or micro chip.

Gotta' disagree with you Jimmy. Not so much wrong or right, just dumb. Even if someone got your card and changed the photo, knowing the VA you, the vet, would have the burden of proof to have to insure that your were the person on the card. Still think they should be using the claim number, thought that's why they issued it.

I do agree, though, that in the future babies will be chipped. All your personal, medical, ect, info will be on it. No secrets in the future, except for the hackers.

Oh, just wait when the ACA kicks in. They're going to put all our records on the open internet. It's part of the paperless bull**** that everyone wants up and running. Psych records, med recs, drugs, the whole deal. I've been waiting for a mass infiltration of the eBennifits site. Amazed that it has been this long (as far as we know).

It costs money but just join Equifax or any of the other credit bureaus. You can lock your credit and personal information so no one can review it, even the guys who work there. I know because I worked there. If they want you, they can get you. It's just a question of of how much they are going to get before they get caught.

Someone tried to get $250 from my bank card somewhere in Texas. They called me and asked where I was. I told them after they verified with a thousand personal questions about me that I was at the grocery store in Tucson. They got the guy just as he was leaving the Wal-Mart.

It's more than your SS number you should worry about. For some years your service number was your SS number. My first blue card had my SS number right on it. Didn't have to be scanned.

One day everything will be on Microchip, it's coming. Just like people living on a space station or the moon, or another planet, it will happen.

Isn't it amazing how all the sci-fi movies and films have come to fruition. Like videophone. I saw that on a movie decades ago, and Zombies.
