LOL... Literally, I just took some of my flatbread / focaccia and fried it in olive oil :p
Drizzle a little pool of oil in a sauté pan, coat the bread in it, and crisp up by frying each side. The 6 edges are all deep fried like deep dish pizza, and the inside all warm, moist, and fluffy. <<< Works especially well with stale bread, making it seem just out of the oven, fresh. But fresh bread equals the exact same end product.
Then when I’m not being horrifically lazy, it can be topped with any kind of veggie (avocado, fire roasted red bell pepper, tomato, pesto, etc.), &/or meat slices, or sauce. <<< I sort of suspect that this was the mother of pizza, fried bread with whatever was handy piled on top, and cheese to make it stay there ;)
We grew up poor so we ate a lot of wonder bread fried in bacon grease, sometimes using an inverted glass to cut out a circle, & crack an egg in the hole for “Toad in a hole.” Happy Memories.
Fried bread -of just about any variety- is mad comfort food.
For x1000 comfort, melt cheese on top for cheesy bread, or smother in bolognese with a dollup of Alfredo for swooning calorific goodness. (We used to do that in the restaurant after shift when we were buying meals ...as it was dirt cheap to buy 2 breadsticks...then a ladle of bolo & ladle of Alfredo, split a bottle of wine, and just bonelessly recover from a run your legs off service).
