Why is the oven so bad?

I'm really trying to understand this.

I'm having trouble again with my oven. Get overwhelmed annd spacy and then find myself with my head in the oven, oven on .... but then it gets hot and I pull back, come crashing back down to reality.

I told my therapist today and they treated this like a suicide attempt.

But is it? I don't think it could actually hurt me, but my therapist seemed so, so worried.

Why is putting my head in the oven so bad? Are there really any risks? What are the risks? Why can't I see this as a problem?

I feel like I am falling apart ....

You’re f*cking joking, right?

What’s the risk of one of the oldest methods of suicide? Aside from death, there’s also brain damage & pulmonary damage & blindness & massive burns & heart attack & stroke & bleeding out & list goes on. But, yeah, not so shockingly it’s death that is the big concern. Regardless of whether you’re talking about suffocating in a cold gas oven, or melting your lungs in a hot one (and then your head exploding as your brain boils, by the by). A single breath of super heated air can melt your lungs past being able to save you, and unlike turning a car on in the garage, a gas oven can kill hou -or turn you into a drooling vegetable- in minutes.

For f*cks sake. Wake up.

What’s the danger? Think. You’re not stupid, so actually stop and think.

If you saw another person putting their head in an oven, without an obvious reason for doing so, would you be concerned?
What if it was a child doing it? What risks might you explain to them? What concerns would you have about them?

If I'm reading correctly, you are not aware of why or what you are doing at the time, and don't know why you were doing it when you come out of it after? So, genuine question - how do you know it wasn't a suicide attempt? How is your therapist supposed to know it wasn't?

Oh that is not healthy. There are other ways if you want to get baked. You dont want to get burned or scars that will stay for life and become another trauma.

Putting our biology at risk can become irreversible. Dont risk another trauma when you are healing.

If this was random then it maybe good idea to talk things out and get active treatment.

I too wonder what events or emotions lead up to you sticking your head in the oven?

What was happening BEFORE you did this??

This was not random @theshadowoftheliving

I agree.

Were you dissociative at the time?
Or was it a self-harmy type urge that you didn't know how badly it could have gone?
Take care of yourself mate.
Never thought I'd have to say this, but try and keep your head out of the oven.
I stay the hell out of the kitchen when I'm not well/dissociative. Too many ways to set the house on fire, even if I don't care about hurting myself.

No. I’m not. I’m really, really struggling to see this as a problem. I just don’t think I would ever get hurt, I just don’t think I would be able to stand the heat long enough for damage to be done.

What’s the danger? Think. You’re not stupid, so actually stop and think.

I’m trying. I’m trying to understand. I’m trying to take this seriously.

So, genuine question - how do you know it wasn't a suicide attempt?

I don’t?

I’m so dissociative when this happens. I don’t think it is *me* that is doing it. But it is still happening ....

So you wouldn't be concerned about anyone else doing this either then? Wouldn't consider them to be putting themselves at any kind of risk by sticking their head in an oven?

I'm asking because I think it's helpful to try and apply some kind of outsider logic to these kinds of things.
If you would have concerns about someone else's safety in the situation but not your own, then it's not that you are safe in the situation when others wouldn't be, it's that you are lacking the necessary concern for your own safety.

Just wanted to add that a cold gas oven will also turn your house into a bomb.
If it doesn't work, there's a good chance it'll leave you with permanent brain damage. The only gas we can breathe is oxygen.

A hot oven is just a horrifically painful death. Not necessarily a quick one either. If you survive it, there isn’t enough morphine on earth to make that bearable. Infection is very likely.
Nor is there a plastic surgeon in existence that can undo that kind of disfigurement.

I'd say this is rather serious.
