Work Is Asking For Too Much

I just found out today that my company is getting me a new phone with all the bells and whistles....YEAH!!! But then I found out why. I will be expected to recieve all calls coming in after hours and route or address them. And to make matters worse, my supervisor (who I thought was pro - me) didn't tell me the second half. I had to find it out from someone else that was in the "special meeting". I'm freaking out!!!!

I have to go to work in 4 hours and haven't been to sleep yet.

I'd like to add more to this thought because after reading it, it sounded rather petty. It's not. I'm over worked and over stressed and to be honest, I'm getting it from all sides. Too much. Too much!!!!
I work enough.
I mother enough.
I try enough.

Somethings gonna give out.

That's just bad management on their part; I'm sorry you were thrown under the bus like that. I never thought that it was petty, honestly I thought it was valid. Try and get some sleep, write down your thoughts to help you vent the stress too. I hope work won't be as bad as it sounds.

I would go mad. I unplug my phone every day. Could not stand to have to be available at all weird hours. I hope you can get that fixed. You do not need any more stress!

I spent a lot of time with a cell phone next to me in case the hospital called to tell me....something about my son (bad news). I had aprivate cell for my personal business but my boss talked me out of keeping it saying it was a waste of $$ because I could use my work phone for everything, no cost to me. So I dropped my phone (and home phone). My work phone is the only one I have now.

What really pisses me off and hurts at the same time, is he knows my history. He knows I panic if I get calls after 9:30. I have 4 kids out in the world and a big family. A call late at night, in my mind, is bad news. What a bastard!

If they follow through with this, I will get a personal cell and turn off the work phone at night. And if they have a problem with it, too bad. I know this could get me fired, but my mental health is a hell of a lot more important than fielding calls for a#$holes who obviously don't give a crap about me.

I realize this could cause financial problems but ya gotta stand up or you don't stand a chance. I just needed to work this out in my head ( and share with poeple who listen). Thank you.

Definitely stand up for yourself! I obviously don't know what type of work you do, however, it sounds particularly stressful to do a job that seemingly never ends. I mean, how late or often do these 'after hours' calls come? There needs to be a separation of personal and private lives. And, in my opinion, a separation of personal and private phones (despite the costs - yes! your mental health is much more important). Is there any chance of negotiating a time with your employer at which you can turn the work phone off? There needs to be a balance. P.S. totally not petty at all.

Best of wishes, Evie.

Will they be offering you OT for the hours you take calls that you are not on the clock?

Look up workplace bullying. Part of what they do is pile you up with an undoable amount of work. If any of what you are reading rings a bell, start taking notes on the stuff going on there. You can refer to it if you need- I did the same thing, and it's a good thing, because a lot of it I have blocked out.
