@illusionist
Croatia is sorta an open to poorness country generally. The problem was the few days when I really didn't have the strength to get any food.

Otherwise, I can always go to the market, and help with loading/unloading in exchange for food. Or play instruments on the streets, one of my cousins earns well from just that. There are options :)

 Thank you for caring, you are an amazing person. Just cannot accept money for free :P

Sorry to hear you're struggling with this :( As a student with massive debt, I do have some ideas though.

- (green) beans are cheap and stay fresh a long time. In my country they're even cheaper when they're in little boxes from the freezer.
- Noodles are the best if you want some quick carbs
- actually, I've made the combination of green beans, noodles and some soy sauce quite often. It tastes pretty good.
- Potatoes. Boil them, bake them, etc. Potatoes with the skins still on are great from the oven. Just add some salt and maybe some herbs like rosemary if you have them.
- Oats: boil with milk or water and add some sugar or honey to taste. They have a lot of fiber so they help you feel full.
- Vitamin supplements: I don't know if they're affordable to you, but they can help you compensate for the nutrients your diet is missing.
- Chicken or vegetable stock can be a great basis for some soup with noodles or rice and some veggies
- Tomato puree or passata, for example as a pasta sauce.

Hope this is helpful. Good luck!

I was homeless for 2-3 years back in 2002 in our country after the World Trade Center Tragedy on Sept. 11th 2001. I had owned a motel and after the bombing, no one was travelling by plane. I lost my motel, had to hand it back to the bank and ended up homeless because no one would hire someone who had no work experience except of owning a motel that had "died."

I survived by begging in the streets and I was not ashamed to accept money from folks. If I had had an instrument to pay, I would have played it! I didn't have a piano, so could not do that option. Oh well. None the less, I stood at the corner of 2 highways and held a sign that said

Homeless
+
Disabled

And a lot of folks gave me money. I got about $75 per day, enough to rent a cheap motel room, buy some food and a few cloths (I had lost everything I owned, of course).

I eventually got help from the government, a thing that they have for homeless folks. I am OK now. I live in a small apartment and have a good life.

I am telling you this because I wanted you to think about the fact that things turned out OK for me, even though I did accept charity. @Saelben.

@Saelben, check the trees around and forests and the like. It's summer coming, one can live quite a bit of time on fruits & it's a good source of hydration & sugars at least. So spending time outside and/or on the move might play your hand.

& Check the pavements carefully. People often lose coins / small change without noticing it or caring for it, & collected up coins can be used to buy small foods or drinks.

@Saelben I meant out of the 'fountain' in the City?

Random coin throwing in a fountain is not 'random'.

Use your local knowledge.

Picking up coins inadvertently dropped on the footpath is entirely different from raiding a particular place people deliberately throw in coins.

Why do they throw them in that fountain?

Local knowledge? You know what I meant.
@Cashew whose going to not notice @Saelben jumping in & out of the fountain? lol...
