New Here
Hi, my name is Thomas, I'm 35 and live in a small Belgian town. I've always been a rather shy and silent guy, but I used to be quite sociable and have self-confidence. I had a lot of friends, had girlfriends and went out a lot. That all changed though when I was raped at age 26.

My friends and I frequented a local bar and one night I was there alone with the owner, a big guy in his 40s. I always thought he was a bit shady, but as I was taught to always be friendly and polite we started talking. He took me out for a snack and suggested to go over to his place to smoke a joint. Once there he started to intimidate and manipulate me and raped me.

I felt ashamed. I thought and still think of myself as a spineless and naive loser. If only I would have had the nerve to stand up to him and leave his apartment or didn't go with him in the first place. But I was too scared he would hurt me.

I didn't dare to tell anyone, I didn't even go to the police. It was too embarrasing. Most of my friends knew him so I thought if I would tell them they would either tell me I was to blame or wouldn't believe me.

As I was afraid I might bump into him in the street (it's a small town), I hardly ever left my apartment for a year, the only people I saw were my family and colleagues. Friends would call me or show up at my door to see how I was doing, but I didn't answer their calls or let them in. I've lost all of them, except for one.

Eventually I moved to a bigger city and later on even abroad. I tried to forget it and start a new life, but that didn't work out. Since that day I haven't been able to make a single new friend as I'm incapable of opening up to people and making a connection.

I moved back to my hometown a few years ago as I found out that guy (the rapist) got convicted for several similar crimes and was put in jail. So it's been almost 10 years now and here I find myself without any friends or prospects in life. All I do is go to work and spent the rest of my time locked in my apartment.

I feel extremely insecure around people and avoid social gatherings as much as I can as they make me feel uncomfortable, at times even anxious. I don't take care of myself properly. I don't eat enough (I've lost so much weight), I have trouble sleeping and can't bring myself to do things. I hate my life and who I've become, I want the old me back!

It wasn't until about 6 months ago I finally found the courage to tell my parents and later on my sister and brother what happened. It was a huge relief to finally be able to tell them and they've been very understanding. I started seeing a psychologist at the local centre for mental health (it's free of charge) and got diagnosed with PTSD.

I can get therapy there but there's a waiting list for 6 to 12 months. So the psychologist gave me some addresses of private practices, but I haven't been able to bring myself to contact any of them until now. But I will soon as the psychologist told me things will get better and I can get through this.

Thanks for reading and I'm sorry if my vocabulary might come across a bit simplistic. English is not my native tongue so it's hard to find the right words and tell how I really feel.

(((Skinnyman)))

I am so sorry for what you went through. My trauma was different so I will not say I know how you feel. Some here will relate and many of us will certainly relate to your symptoms.

I am pleased you found us.

Wishing you peace
KP

I can relate to isolating yourself, I have done that pretty much my whole life. I can say this, it is tempting to avoid stressful and anxiety inducing situations because you think you are avoiding pain but you are not. I bet a lot of the time when you sit inside your apartment you are very unhappy and in a great deal of pain. Just about all the happiness you will ever find in life will be a direct result of confronting your fears. At times your anxiety will become too much and you will need to isolate and that is ok, but as much as you can try and overcome you fears, at least a little bit at a time. If you make isolating a habit you will only become more more afraid over time. Maybe start by just saying hi to a neighbor when you see them in the street. It doesnt matter if you dont say it in a friendly enough way and they dont respond well, just congratulate yourself that you faced your fear and are making progress.

I wish you the best of luck. I am sorry for what happened to you. I am sure you have the strength to overcome this.

Hey, skinnyman, and welcome. Sorry to hear you're struggling and in pain, hopefully you can find support here. Don't worry about your writing, you are very eloquent - especially as you are not writing in your own language.

Good to have you here, remember small steps still move us forward skinnyman

Thomas,
So glad you had the courage to tell your family...I think that is a huge step forward and you will start healing. It's too hard to hold that kind of emotion in, and no wonder you were isolating yourself. Hope you find this forum supportive and informative. And your English is great. ;)

(((Skinnyman))) welcome to the forum. I'm so sorry that happened to you and that you're struggling with it. A big well done for telling your family though, that's massive! I hope you benefit from being here. And don't worry about your English, you express yourself very well.

Thank you all for the nice responses and hugs. It's much appreciated. I'm a bit at a loss for words now :) It's nice to know there are people who understand and I sure am glad I found this place.

I get what you're saying about isolation, Loner. Sometimes it feels comforting to be able to isolate myself, cut off from the world, but most of the time I feel very lonely and angry and frustrated with myself. I still have a lot of feelings of blame and guilt partly because I let it happen, let him walk over me like that, partly because all these years I thought I just had to get myself together and get over it. But i never tried to face my demons, all I did was run away from them. I even literally fled to another country. The situation isn't as dire as it may have sounded though. Things have improved a bit since I moved back to my hometown 4 years ago. I'm closer to my family and I'm very friendly with everyone at work, I really feel accepted there. I even go for a drink with some colleagues after work from time to time. I always keep my distance, but it feels safe as we mostly talk about work.

It sure felt like a huge step forward to be able to tell my family what happened. I consider myself very lucky for having them. Also talking to a psychologist and subsequently getting diagnosed with PTSD made me realise I've been too harsh on myself. It's comforting to know I'm not the only one going through this and that the symptoms I've been having are a "normal" consequence of what happened in the past. I called a therapist today, but I'm waiting for her to return my call.

Thanks to all of you for the warm welcome.

Welcome, I am not the only skinny man here anymore! :D

Seriously:
I am also a man.
I developed PTSD at a late age.
I am unnecessarily isolated by this stuff.
I've lost weight.
I have trouble with English (although English is my native tongue, I've become stuttery etc)

Welcome, I am not the only skinny man here anymore! :D

Do you have so much trouble finding pants that fit too? :) No, seriously, I'm down to size 28 which is the smallest size you can find here in stores (and you really have to look for them) and still I constantly have to pull up my pants. And I do wear belts.

Last time I checked I weighed 56 kilograms (for 1m78) and that was months ago. People are giving me remarks on my weight all the time. I don't dare to wear shorts anymore, even t-shirts are hard because my arms look like sticks. Tips on how to gain weight are more than welcome. The problem is that food just doesn't interest me. But I saw there's a topic touching on weight and food, so maybe I should post in there.

Thanks for welcoming me and nice to meet you.

Thomas,
Have you tried protein/meal replacement shakes? I know they are available over here, and I'm sure over there...like in health food stores etc. :)
