I pay. I did go down the route of seeing an NHS therapist, which gave me six weeks of CBT (government funded), but all that did was made me realise how much I needed a proper therapist. I see her once a week. I'm quite lucky though, as her rates are very reasonable, largely based on where I live (heavily low income). I know if I chose to see a therapist in another part of the UK, I could be looking a three or four times the cost.

Used to be out of pocket.

These days, no therapy. Can't afford it, can't afford commuting to it, & nobody that works even remotely with fields I need help at. (Or basically trauma therapists & PTSD, as is.)

Honestly that's the least I worry about these days though. I'm really trying to not be homeless, not give my abusers that pleasure of dying, & not disappearing as trying to assemble money for basics.

My therapy is free and that was a deal between my therapist and I. He hasn't charged me in about a year and half.

My psychiatrist is not free. I pay out of pocket for her and had to cancel last session because I couldn't afford it. My insurance does not cover her and even though she asked her office manager to discount me I think the manager forgot because I still pay regular price, which is hard to afford. My insurance changed to a different plan so maybe that is more affordable, I'll find out next session.

I spend between $800 - $1200 a month (50% of my income) on therapy and then another couple hundred on supportive treatment. Insurance pays 31% of therapy costs and nothing on the supportive modalities. And then they deny my claim every other month so it's six months before I get reimbursed. Even though the receipts are exactly the same as they have been for three years. My last insurance company refused to pay anything unless the pdoc gave them a treatment plan. I decided that was none of their business so for several years, my therapy was purely out of pocket.

Did Somatic Experiencing help you?

@void I know you weren't asking me but I wanted to reply. SE saved my life. Ten years in cognitive therapy and my symptoms were worsening. My pdoc changed how she did therapy and has trained as a trauma specialist focusing on SE. I feel normal some days! My quality of life has improved vastly and my health is improving. I'm rarely frozen into nothingness anymore. I would recommend it to anyone with ptsd. It's hard work for both the T and client but well worth it.

My therapist is employed by the NHS, so government funded. However as a tax payer it is me and the rest of the tax-paying community that are paying for it.

I have unlimited sessions for as long as I need it. I am now into my 7th year with the same therapist, but I have not needed to see him since December. Last year I think I had a total of 5 sessions, but it really is up to me to ask for an appointment. I have achieved so much through therapy that I am forever grateful to my T.

So far, it hasn't. I (and my wallet) are currently taking a break from it. I will probably go back, because I think, for me, it is probably key to unlocking myself from PTSD hell. I think there are a combination of reasons for why it has not helped thus far. I think it's gonna be a long, expensive road.

By the way, we tried brain spotting a few times which did nothing for me other than frustrate the shit out of me. I personally think it's a bunch of crap. Next time I will have to tell her that.

SE saved my life. T

I'm glad to hear it worked so effectively for you!
