Trump himself is responsible for (temporarily) relieving sanctions on Iran three weeks ago which is a very novel approach to fighting anyone, and thus responsible for those receipts being available for war and internal repression in Iran (though obviously not the massacres in January). Do you understand that he aided the murderous Iranian regime this way?

It's just another one on the pile of examples where in the most charitable interpretation he doesn't think even the second step ahead.

At various points war aims have been claimed to be regime change or shuttering the Iranian nuclear program or reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Given that there's been at least a nod to negotiating a cessation of hostilities with Iran and the failure of its regime to collapse following multiple decapitation strikes and that nobody is talking about it much any more it seems that the first has already been taken off the table, and that's the only one that stood to spare Iranian civilians from the regime in future.

The way I read that is that it is a balancing act for Trump right now. He has the midterms coming up and if oil prices are out of reach for his supporters then his chances of maintaining his current power will be threatened.

Your article said that lifting sanctions could provide funds to the [Islamic] regime. That short-term pressure release was for the global economy. The idea that lifting sanctions for a few weeks equals funding Islamic regime murders is a bit odd to me. Whatever funds they may have gained from that are rapidly slipping away from the blockade.

That's derived from anthony's "he is blockading the straight to STOP IRAN from exporting THEIR oil which makes IRAN MONEY, which funds IRAN bombing MORE civilians." Allowing Iran to sell more oil = more civilians get bombed by that logic.

He needs the previous Gulf oil exports status quo to resume well before November in order for both pump prices to take their usual long time to regain the previous equilibrium after a shock and additionally for people to believe that the whole business is truly in the rear view mirror.

But he doesn't have a way of doing that that doesn't involve either: attempting to break the Iranian ability to blockade the Strait with a ground invasion to take and hold of all potential anti-shipping launch sites that Iran has (which given the range of Shaheds would be the entire country); or surrendering i.e. suing for peace and let Iran charge their tolls for safe passage to help fund their nuclear ambitions; or blunder through and hope something favourable happens such as an Iranian counterrevolution or the regime suddenly showing a desperation for peace for some reason.

Error. I do not have SSI. It is monthly social security. I get retirement benefits from opm..how did the US get this way
