A Little About Me

Mate, thanks for sharing your story. At the time you could probably laugh at the stupidity of the Major, we all do that, and even joke with your mates like 'I couldn't see shit' and 'I wanted to blast those ##^@ers', but the silent stress build up happens and we have to push it down into the vault and move on, that's what we are trained to do, right???
Everyone has stories like that, and the small minded people out there would say, 'nobody died', 'you came back alive', etc, etc, but personally and I could probably speak for the rest of the forum, you were kissed on the dick that day mate.
While I was over there a routine patrol went out and was hit by an IED, for some stupid reason some fairly high ranker was on that patrol, and was hit. The shit fight started when and even higher rank went out with the QRF, but the taliban had cottoned on to procedure and hid their secondary IED's 300 m back from the first ones, so when the QRF deployed and arrived they detonated killing whoever that higher rank was. My mind is a little foggy on that, maybe 'SPOCK' can help me out here.

Flynnman you were probably in more dangerous situations than that too. This is why we are so different from other people with PTSD and why we don't fit in to the other forum.

You see, the majority of them, I won't say all, have only suffered one incident, like a car accident, or a natural disaster, or god forbid a rape. It's enough for them to suffer from the symptoms of PTSD for the rest of their lives and their symptoms are every bit as bad as ours. The Beast does not discriminate there; however, the problem we have is when it comes to therapy.

The standard person that has a single trauma to deal with can generally get through that with therapy and lead a semi normal life. Stress will still affect them, but nothing like us. My therapists have got me to a level where the past is no longer haunting me. There are still a shit tin of incidents that I need to deal with, but as they are not causing problems, they will leave it alone.

A lot of Vietnam Veterans have a bigger problem. For 40 plus years some of them have been hiding their demons, so when they go to therapy, a good therapist will only open 'Pandora's Box' a little while to deal with the issues affecting their life, then they close it again.
A lot of them will die without even touching those nightmares.

I am waffling here. Sorry for stealing your thread.

Jimmy, I could not have said it better........We all have been in combat and that is why we are all Brothers and Sisters in Blood. With us Vietnam guys it was the times we lived in and the help we did not have/get....I am sure with me an others, we have real bad trust issues, because of it...........After all the time that has passed for me, I do try and take some comfort in that you younger Brothers and Sisters are getting help sooner (that could be a hell of a lot better)! But I have to stay hard, as it's f*cking hard knowing that 22 soldiers will not be with us tomorrow..............

Thanks for the welcome all. Jimmy you are right, I have been in more dangerous situations than that one. It was just the feeling of being trapped, exposed, with no communication or intel, and not trusting my leadership to make good decisions that messed me up. I can't tell that story out loud with out flashing back and getting the super shakes. Everything I've read however, tells me that repeatedly telling my stories will help me come to terms with what happened and lessen the emotional responses. I just have to be sure Im in a safe place with a person I trust before I begin. I'll be sure to be posting in the other Forums in the future. Thanks again.

Flynnman, telling the story out loud over and over will eventually desensitize you to it, that is basically how therapy works. You tell your story while in a safe environment like the rooms or couch of a therapist and they talk about your feelings. Do this with enough repetitions and that story will be filed away where it should be and be just a bad memory. If you hang on to a story like that and not get through it, it will be like a sore with a scab on it, and if enough good and bad stress gets to you, the scab can be lifted and you will have to face the raw emotions once again.

The problem we have is that our mind has so many of those stories it can take a lifetime to get through them all.

Having said that though, sometimes a therapist will choose not to lift the scab and deal with the emotions, usually if it is not causing them grief. For instance, I have been two years without dealing with any traumas, but of late the stress in my head has built up like a huge pimple and I don't want it to burst as I am afraid of the outcome, so I am off to the therapist on Wednesday, hopefully he will lance it and ease the pressure a bit.

Sorry for all the analogies.

Don't recall Jimmy, I do know it wasn't Taliban ;) but I know what you meant between the Sunni & Shite extremists,, Al quaida insurgents and imported suck-wads...
