So I'm wanting to get a tablet. Never had one before and one of the things I really want is to be able to draw so it needs to be one you can use a stylus / pen with.

Apple is the best for artists from what I can gather. But I'm not an artist, it will be a hobby for me.

Apple is dead expensive.

My phone is a samsung android and android and apple aren't easily synced as far as I can tell.

If anyone has any info to help me decide which to get I'll be v grateful :)

I use all Apple, so I can’t help pro/con, I’m too biased... BUT... one thing to know about Apple is they have badass previous gen & refurbished deals. Generally about half off full price. And those devices are just as covered under warranty/repair/replacement as the newest ones. As well as geniusBars (all closed right now) that you can sign up for free 1:1 training, product Q’s, etc. Where I live there are literally a Microsoft and Apple store across the parking lot from each other, so I know mSoft does that, too, although they charge for it... and are... less than excited?... about helping. (Stuck up hipster douchebags was what I was trying to find something more polite than. It was just like jeeeezus. I came here, to avoid asking my asshole husband, so now you’re gonna be an asshole to me, too? Kiss my...) Apple has never made me feel stupid, no matter how “duh” my problem was, they’ve always been happy/excited to show me how to do anything I wanted to do. No idea about other android brands, aside from mSoft.

Because my ex was a programmer, and my kid a gamer... we usually had something like 11 working computers (including a couple Linux boxes, and a few other quirky Frankenstein’s monster type things co bled together), and then whole little flocks of devices in the house. I liked Apple best (for a lot of different reasons) so that’s why I chose it. MacBookPro, iPad, iPhone. It took a little getting used to, I grew up on IBM & DOS, it was so NOT “user friendly” in the beginning (okay, how the f*ck do I...?), but it became wicked intuitive after a few months.

Is that something you could do? (Not marry a programmer ;) & play with all of his toys)... Rent an iPad/Android for a month each, to see what you like best, before committing to buying?

(this will help no one decide anything. But it’s funny.)

I have a surface tablet (pro 5) and I love it, it's the third surface I've bought over the years. I looked at getting an actual laptop after my last surface died (*ahem, cough* 'cause I dropped it and super-smashed the screen during a workout), but ultimately decided on the pro 5. I have used this one for a lot of school work, like note-taking and drawing, writing on diagrams, etc. I also have 2 useless fingers on my left hand, and with the smaller flatter keyboard I can actually type almost normally. On the negative side though, you have to use the microsoft play store for apps.

Once you go Apple, you're locked in. If they want to make you own a crappy U2 album, there's nothing you can do about it, you're gonna have that album, like it or not.

Multiple companies and providers sign up with Android, and if you hate one provider's flavor of Android, it's easy to find another you like better.

I don't have iPods or apples. My phone is Samsung android and my kindle is Amazon fire android. I'm pleased with them. Apple is really expensive, your paying through the nose for a brand name. You can use stylus with Amazon kindle fire.

So, more thinking on the matter, pros and cons maybe.

I'm a very little bit if a gadget nerd, research stuff and want something good. But that's almost an automatic tendency and not necessarily one I need to follow here. So whilst a part of me says get the best latest apple and pen and keyboard, really, that would cost a fortune and is it even necessary?

Renting an ipad for a short time is an excellent idea and I've emailed a company about it. Course they may be closed for coronavirus but I expect I'll know soon enough if that's the case and I'm not really in a hurry.

I can defo carry on reading reviews of both maker's different models and generations to see what appeals.

And other things I'm wondering about will prolly become clear after trialling them out.

I highly recommend the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, 4 or 5. They are very good for drawing with, you can draw with a stylus, like the wacom ink or whatever... etc. I've used them for drawing before. My mom has a Tab 3 and a Tab 4. I don't own one - I considered getting a Tab 4 for the longest time, but instead I'm planning on getting one of those screenless drawing pads. Still, highly recommend the Tabs. I'm completely an android fan, btw.

Thanks @Frostheaved :) Wondering, Is there a reason why you dont suggest the tab 6?

First news back on trying to rent an ipad, every where I've asked so far has 1 year as minimum lease length.
