Aromatherapy That May Help Relieve Some PTSD Symptoms

Use it very sparingly Ayesha, it is a very heavy oil and very strong. It will work just as well using is this way and will last a lot longer.

Remember less can be best with some oils, and Ylang Ylang can give you a head ache if you use too much.

I like the smell of sandalwood, strong and grounding and makes me think... ancient smell. It's like hearing Arabic...you know it's been around for a while and you understand why it's been prized for a long time. Like frankincense.

I notice they have sandalwood that is 'in jojoba oil', and is much cheaper. I noticed a few other costly oils ( frankincense for example) this way. Thoughts?

As long as they are good quality there is not reason why you should not buy any of the expensive ones already diluted in a base oil.

You can tell the better quality ones as they are always in brown bottles and have the Latin name on them too.

Try and avoid any that are in other coloured bottles and without the Latin name on too, as they could be the cheaper chemical version, which have no aromatherapy properties in them at all.

My favorite combination of oils is lavender and lemon. They were both cheap, together only costing me about 15 dollars. They are versatile and perfect for everyday. Wonderful for refreshing the house after cleaning and anytime a light but invigorating fragrance is needed.

If your looking for something fresh and clean after you have cleaned your house, try making a room spray with Sage oil.

Use distilled water in a new spray bottle and add about 10 drops to every 100 mls. Give it a good shake then mist your room with it, being careful of wood and electrics, it freshens fabrics up a treat. Just be careful you dont wet the fabrics just use a light misting.

I have a question amethist. Would some oils be taken internally? The reason I am asking is when my friend and I went on an outing there was a lady with all kinds of aromatherapy and other essential oil stuff. She used some test (that I don't believe) to tell my friend she needed a few different oils to solve a bunch of her problems. The oils she suggested she said you can either use them for aromatherapy or you put them into a capsule and take them like a pill. That seems a little odd to me though. Aren't the oils not meant to be taken internally?

Hi Pirate Lady.

To be honest the recommendation for use of essential oils is in any form but internally. There are a few that can be taken highly diluted in something like sunflower oil and placed in capsules, but I would not recommend it at all.

Lavender and a few other oils can be used in minute amounts for baking, but again unless you know what you are doing I would stick to the tried and tested ways.

They are so highly concentrated that you could do yourself more harm than good, and even the best books say avoid taking oils internally.

Personally I would not do it.

Oils are absorbed into body when you use them as massage oils and lotions, but the amounts are tiny as you have already diluted them.

The International Federation of Aromatherapists, advises against the use of them internally, because of the high concentration and the high toxicity of some oils.

I could go on for ages, but using the right oils for what you require them for, sticking to the usual methods and diluting them correctly, and following all safety guide lines, you should be OK.

Well, I got sandalwood 'in jojoba oil', which was $15 instead of $55. I am disappointed, but I guess I should not be surprised. The sandalwood I got was already distilled by the jojoba oil and therefore does not work at all in a essential oils diffuser. I tired putting twice as much; nothing. Couldn't smell anything. So it's going back to the store and maybe I will get something else.

I was looking forward to it. :( But I can't afford the 55 dollar one.
