I suffered horrific abuse as a child from being thrown around, dropped down the stairs and landing on my head
(age 3). Subsequently my main abuser (Eldest brother) would beat me to the head every night he came to bed until I was 15 years old (this has resulted in my acute insomnia suffering now since early childhood).

He would always hit me to the rear of the head (right hand side where all cognition and memories are stored).

I am currently diagnosed with :-

1) C-PTSD with severe trauma abuse issues.
2) Combat related PTSD.
3) Borderline Personaliity Disorder with explosive triggers (Explosive Personality Disorder).
4) Dissociative Identity Disorder.

Due to the beatings and repeated punches to the head, being assaulted at the age of 16 by being smacked around the back of the head with a piece of 4x2 (some best friend he was) and my head injury from 2 years ago and admission to intensive care in a coma (assaulted with a brick which split my head open) and has resulted in pains to the back of my head they are considering a diagnosis of TBI as well.

Hey ho, I guess that's is just FML for you.

@illusionist The "F" word My Life.

I know Laurie. I am in the process of getting some pretty big health diagnosis too. Some of which I probably would never have had had it not been for the abuse, or had I received decent medical care as a child. Its B.S.

Laurie, on the subject of "labels", my T says this. "It's nothing but a list of characteristics that exist on a continuum. Everyone has more of less of them. It just happens that YOU have more than 'most' people in a few areas." He says that he will only really be happy with labels when they get so specific that we each get one of our very own, that is "us".

I can see how they might think you've suffered a TBI or 2 (or more). That's worth knowing, I think. It's an injury, not so different than a broken bone. Once you know it's there, and learn what it means, it should be easier to fashion work arounds.

While they're attaching labels to you, I hope they remember to include "kind, funny, compassionate, determined, survivor, etc" to the list!

Laurie, actually, this will sound strange - but a bit like @scout86 said - if in fact you have a TBI, then it's likely your borderline diagnosis would go away (because those types of personality changes can be common with TBI), and chunks of your other symptomology could be reconciled under the TBI as well.

So it likely would not be an additional diagnosis, but a shift.

diagnoses don't contribute to your functioning, they just describe it. i have quite a plethora of 'em and honestly i'm not sure if it's development & attachment, socialization gone wrong, legit dev shit, adhd, autism spectrum... they're all floating around on my chart and at this point we have no idea really how the brain works or why, sometimes i wonder if i'm not autistic, maybe i'm just brain damaged or have TBI from abuse or didn't get the opportunity to develop right socially, i dunno! doctors have thrown around a load of shit over the years, but i've come to realize that it doesn't really matter. my functioning is my functioning, it's that way no matter what, the only thing a diagnosis can do is help me narrow down exactly how things are working behind the scenes.
