Thanks to someone's suggestion on here, I have an agency now helping me with my case. I mean, they're going to get paid but still helpful :)

They got me on the "dire need" list and today I got a letter from social security scheduling me for a "mental examination" with some Doctor in 2 weeks. And then I can expect a decision 1-2 months after.

Anyone else have this exam? Can you please shed some light on procedure, do's and don't's, etc?

I had to go through that, but it was many years ago and my memory is sketchy at best. I can try though.
It was pretty easy, he asked for the date, the day of the week (I remember I had to peek at my watch). He asked me to write a few sentences, and to draw a few things. We talked about what seemed mundane things. The appointment lasted about 45 minutes and then I waited to hear. I assume the assessment is pretty standard across each state, though it may differ somewhat. What I remember most is being very uncomfortable, I felt like "this was it", would I pass, fail? I remember being shaky as well, and when I look back, I think that I worked myself up for no reason, because I feel it went pretty well despite how stressed out I was. (I also was having problems with my primary doctor, and maybe the stress of doctors in general carried over? I am not sure). I wish I had known breathing exercises back then to calm myself. That would have helped out immensely.
I think it would be good to go into the appointment calmly and with as clear of a head as possible. Trust that he/she knows what they are doing and will make a fair assessment. Not sure if I have helped or not but I hope it goes well for you x

It was in my favor, but it was confusing because it ended up being physical and mental. So I often get reviewed for each.
I like you, had a long wait to even get to that point. I had to call ombudsman and write my senator before I was able to get that appointment. Even with their help (finally), it was an 18 month wait total.
