I've had nightmares for as long as I can remember. Forever. 30+ years. Insomnia as child, night terrors and slowly I made peace with them. I get them almost nightly but I am emotionally removed from them 90% of the time as an adult. I used to joke I should have written movie plots.
Some are repeats, ancient ones. The rest vary but stick to one of a few themes. The subject matter is bad to really awful (extreme torture).
By accident I found that 5-HTP seemingly blocks them, the opposite reaction from what I have read.
The odd thing is now that I am basically not dreaming (gone from 3x a night most days to maybe 1 every 2 weeks!). But I started having flashbacks for the first time and remembering things, I am a mess. My T wanted me to stop the 5-HTP to restart the dreams but it was too much...I am a flooded mess so we are back pedaling in therapy and trying to slow things.
My question...has anyone had a sudden cease of nightmares? It almost seems like I blocked one escape for the nightmares so they found a new way "out" through flashbacks?!
I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar.
Thank you! Whirlwind
