MTV True Life - "I Have PTSD"

on saturday the 6th of December at 5pm cst, MTV is airing their new true life documentary following three young veterans recently discharged and suffering from PTSD. Havent seen any of it yet but it should be interesting, they followed me around with cameras for a few months, hopefully they edit it well.

I'll watch the first episode and see whats up. I just have this awful feeling that MTV will exploite this situation for daytime drama ratings like one of its "The Real Life" series or any number of the waste of time shows they come up with. To me this is like a femanist going to Hue Heffners house to talk about the meaning of being a Woman. She might want to talk about real issues but Hue just wants to take a picture and sell you.

I just hope I am wrong.

I really hope you are wrong too. Ive spent a lot of time with the shows producer as he is also the camera man, and I have the utmost faith in him. i guess we'll find out on saturday.

If memory serves, these "True Life" shows are one-hour documentaries about young people living with a specific circumstance, such as a disease or a difficulty.

I am interested in seeing how the vets are portrayed, not least because I've never actually met someone else with PTSD in real life. I am so curious about what similarities I might see.

It's nothing against saveavet or the other soldiers doing the show, they have greater courage than I do, I couldn't do it thats for sure. Of course I want the show to be a success and have a positive impact the lives of those who suffer. I guess I am just worried. :dontknow:

Im worried half to death. they could either make me look really good or really bad. thats the scary thing about doing this kind of thing. I've done over ten hours of interviews with them including a couple drunk ones. so the oppurtunity is there for them to make it a political peice or exploitive, but im still confident in the producer. MTV themselves did not produce the show, they outsourced to a production company to make it for them. I would NEVER have done the show if I didnt kind of have aterior motives. its hard enough for me to deal with this shit, much less have someone following me record it 24/7. but I started a charity for PTSD and Im hoping the documentary will help raise awareness.
