Here is a full pic of my avatar dog. He wears a fluorescent vest because some of my neighbors think he is a wolf .. don't want him getting shot! He is also wearing his Mutt-Luks -- they keep his feet from freezing on days colder than -30 degrees. That is life in Montana on the border with Canada.

Tim,

He's a beautiful Shepherd! His Mutt-Luks gave me a good laugh.

My dogs are my pride and joy. My hyper-vigilance seems to subside when they are with me. I guess it is because I know they are "on guard" for my benefit with their enhanced senses. It sounds silly, but my blood pressure is significantly lowered by their presence.

Same here Tim... Nala clears the house for me when we come home from somewhere and I get
"one of those feelings"... she runs perimeter and checks doors and windows and alerts if she heards or smells someone with a command... but mostly? Just her being there is a Xanax in disguise, only with worse addictive properties.. lol Thats ok.. its a good addiction...

There is actually quite a bit of valid research on just this subject. In short, it is a fact that human blood pressure and relative stress levels drop significantly when accompanied by a mammalian pet, specifically canines and felines.

You can dig up any number of papers on the subject via Google. They make for a fun read. In one it is proven that dogs are a superior alternative to that Prasosin crap they like to feed to us PTSDers.

The beauty of this is that to date, no one knows why this is so. In one study they figured it was the "baby rearing instinct" kicking in, but when folks with dogs were compared to the same folks with babies, it was found stress actually increases along with blood pressure and digestive tract instability.

Being the dog addicted science geek I am, I actually used that paper as a defense against having any more kids with my wife. In short:

"Look honey, here is proof that it is wiser to get another pug or two rather than having a baby."

Then again, perhaps this is one of the reasons I get to sleep with the dogs in the basement bedroom, rather than with them and her in the master bedroom...;)

Ran across this and didn't know if it was photo shopped or not but makes a hell of a photo.

I don't know how my dog helps me, he just does and that's good enough for me.

I saw a similar jump pic... maybe its not photoshopped.... and ya Nala is good enough for me...

just noticed this though... there is no umbilical line connected to the dog to pull his chute....

No chutes in that pic. That is a low level water entry from a hovering osprey( or helo?). The yellow packs on the dog are flotation.

Not certain why a K9 unit would need to do a water entry, Unless the SEALs are running badass working dogs.

EDIT: Thanks Google Image Search....

One thought -- if you have PTSD get a service dog!

Talk to "Tim and Bailey" on this site about a service dog. He runs an organization in Washington that places service dogs with PTSD sufferers.

All my dogs wear Mutt-Luks during the extremely cold days in the Montana high country. With no Mutt-Luks, their paw pads get packed with ice and they suffer greatly. They are only $35 for a set of four.

Below is a pic of my new puppy - Sequoia, a Boston Terrier. She is around 3 months old and I've had her a month or so. She is with me about 22/7. around an hour in the morning when I get up, she gets to play with her sisters (not related) in the enclosed front yard and go to the bathroom. Then later in the afternoon, she gets an hour or so to play in the house again with her sisters. Other than that, she is with me all day/night and goes wherever I do. I try to keep her entertained and loved when she is awake. I make sure she is well fed/watered, and gets bathroom breaks outside. She spends a lot of time sleeping and growing. She's more than doubled in size in a month.

Right now, several hours/naps/playtimes later, she looks and is positioned just as the pic. lol. I'll post better pictures later. It was rainy last week, and this week I'm in a LOT of pain. I prefer outdoor pics of pets.
