Research, research, research, research....and resarch. I did hours a day, every day learning about training in every single area. I spent money on training tools, books, videos. I spend every single waking hour engulfed in this.
I am owner training and have spent about $500 so far. I have watched at least 1000 videos. I have 6 books. And bought a VOD.
You must be dedicated, owner training or not, to training for the remainder of the dog's life. You must maintain a level of training well above any normal pet.
The best thing I can advise is to research insanely hard.
My service dog in training is an amazing help to me but I am also very dedicated to him.

VERY good point. And ESA sits there for you to pet and love on. A service dog performs a service (tasks) that you cannot do on your own.
