I had been diagnosed with severe IBS, severe "nervous stomach", severe reflux, etc. etc. for years until a gall bladder attack (that luckily didn't require surgery) prompted me to drastically change my consumption habits to try to avoid losing an organ I was born with for a damn good reason.
Overnight, I gave up all meat, dairy, eggs, caffeine, alcohol, gluten, and as much artificially processed stuff as humanly possible. Gluten was my gateway discovery prior to the drastic change. After only a week of not consuming it, I had much less inflammation, pain, and brain fog. That was the eye-opener I needed to pay closer attention to the whole gut/brain connection and such.
Once I gave up all the other stuff, symptoms started disappearing slowly but surely, and I no longer suffer with those things listed above, nor have to take anymore prescription or OTC meds to supposedly manage it. The gut still feels ALL the feels, but learning how to fuel it with things that actually nurture it seems to be the key for me. I also lost over 110 lbs. (previously weighed 324 lbs. and was almost bedridden) and got much of my life back that I'd been told to get used to not having.
Three and a half years later, I'm still managing the symptoms via diet (knock on wood). It's a lot of work, but so worth it. The hubby used to have awful reflux and was on nexium, ate tums like candy, and often slept in the recliner sitting up....gout was a frequent issue, too....but once he started eating much like I do, he no longer suffers from it, either.
Best wishes in finding some lasting relief.
