Severe heartburn and other awful things

I had been diagnosed with severe IBS, severe "nervous stomach", severe reflux, etc. etc. for years until a gall bladder attack (that luckily didn't require surgery) prompted me to drastically change my consumption habits to try to avoid losing an organ I was born with for a damn good reason.

Overnight, I gave up all meat, dairy, eggs, caffeine, alcohol, gluten, and as much artificially processed stuff as humanly possible. Gluten was my gateway discovery prior to the drastic change. After only a week of not consuming it, I had much less inflammation, pain, and brain fog. That was the eye-opener I needed to pay closer attention to the whole gut/brain connection and such.

Once I gave up all the other stuff, symptoms started disappearing slowly but surely, and I no longer suffer with those things listed above, nor have to take anymore prescription or OTC meds to supposedly manage it. The gut still feels ALL the feels, but learning how to fuel it with things that actually nurture it seems to be the key for me. I also lost over 110 lbs. (previously weighed 324 lbs. and was almost bedridden) and got much of my life back that I'd been told to get used to not having.

Three and a half years later, I'm still managing the symptoms via diet (knock on wood). It's a lot of work, but so worth it. The hubby used to have awful reflux and was on nexium, ate tums like candy, and often slept in the recliner sitting up....gout was a frequent issue, too....but once he started eating much like I do, he no longer suffers from it, either.

Best wishes in finding some lasting relief.

hi Tornatic Thoughts

Yes I to have gone through many changes in my diet to try and combat this. I eat a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables I eat hemp hearts nuts and a farm fresh egg from my chickens. I eat a lot from my garden when in season and try to put some up for winter. My doctor had me cut out gluten, dairy, red meat, processed foods and many other foods. I have been very careful about food and diet but nothing helped much at all.

Narcotic's took care of sever IBS problems for a while when I stopped taking them the problem returned with a vengeance. I couldn't leave home much as I needed a bathroom. The two medication I take now are helping with the problems. I still have a lot of troubles in the morning hours from about 4am till 10 am. at the first signs of trouble in the morning I take Lomotil I don't take it every day but most I do.

Lately everyone has been adding on the stress and pushing me hard into what they think I need to b...
I don't know if my GI issues are directly caused by trauma/stress etc, or whether they would have been likely anyway, but it all sure as hell made them worse and aggravates them.

It's a constant balancing act for me as things I can do for one GI issue can end up aggravating a different GI issue, add in some disordered eating/food anxiety stuff and some allergies and food intolerance....well it all gets pretty stressful in itself which then ends up making it all worse :banghead:

For the GORD side of things (i have other GI issues too but I'll stick with the reflux here), I am on lansoprazole. I don't really like being on it long term, but, for the most part, it does help to control it. When I'm particularly stressed though it still acts up anyway.

The main problem for me with taking the lansoprazole (or other PPIs) is it affects absorption of other things. My body is already poor at storing iron (for unknown reasons) and the PPI makes absorbing it harder too, so I am on iron tablets now long term as well.

I get the not wanting to eat in case it triggers the reflux, but I also find not eating can trigger it and stomach pain too so that can end up being another catch 22.

Sorry don't know if this actually helpful - more of an 'I hear you' really.

Sorry, that was a post and run. Ppis are also addicting in the same way that is you use affrin for more than a few days, you will get rebound congestion.

My husband has barrets sp? esophagus and has tried it all. Aloe juice helps too. Just make sure it isnt the laxitive kind. Too much fiber can also be a bad thing.
