My husband is a teacher and am doing my best to try and be supportive and listen to his fears. He has...
I agree. We need to nationalize a safety protocol for schools. We dont really get the training we need because of funding and fear.we dont want to talk about it. I am amazed that there is never a conversation about what to do in an assembly or if yours is the first classroom a shooter enters.

And @She Cat I disagree. Lock down procedures can and do save lives.
A highschool down the street from us had one fatality. While this is sad in this case the lock down that school practiced worked.
Unfortunately, gun men, know now to pull the fire alarm. We need to research and get more clever.

I know what to do in my area of the school.
It is about fleeing to the surrounding neighborhood.

In the columbine shooting they had bombs in the parking lot, though, so that is why the lock down. It really can work.

So fleeing or staying could be good or bad options as in every emergency, there are good or bad options. It all depends.

That ability to think critically and choose the right option needs to be in our training.
The ability to handle a gun man needs to be as well.
Even if it is throwing a trash can at the person.
We need to get clever with this.
As far as coping skills I really wish my school could talk about it and come together as a community.
I am doing better, though I still hate the world.
I know there is beauty in the world.

@Scarlet13 I said Ireally didn’t know which was better, people running or hunkering down. I don’t know, but maybe staying in place works?!?!? ? In the video that was taken by one of the students, where they were all on the floor hunkering down, my only thought was “they are screaming” and the gunman can hear them. Yes, I understand how scared and frightened they must have been, but screaming only tells the shooter where they are. I guess more needs to be done to help students and teachers on how to hide and do it quietly so that they have a better chance of surviving.

It’s a very sad day when our children have to go to school and be taught how to STAY ALIVE!!!!!!

I’ve now talked to a teacher who has drills every month at their school. Their district doesn’t believe that sheltering in place works, so they teach the kids to RUN. They believe that a moving target is harder to hit than a bunch of kids huddled together....
