What animals did you see today?

I saw a (or the?) cormorant again, this time sitting on the water, after dipping its head under. And a grey heron yesterday it called and landed on the water, I’ve never heard one before.

I’m not sure if I could even recognize a cormorant if they’re not drying off their wings?
There aren’t many kinds of water birds around here and no completely dark ones so I think that makes them stand out! I’ve never (in memory) seen them before this year so I’m excited.

Apart from that it’s the wing shape, I think that’s what caught my eye the most when it went past, or the proportions.

Coues deer behind the house.

So, I'm in my office trying to work with the headphones on when I hear this bang, bang, bang. Miffed and thinking it was maintenance, I started walking around looking out of my windows and then walked out onto the balcony. It was either the tiniest maintenance man I've ever seen or it was a very small black and white woodpecker. About the size of a cardinal? I tried to take a picture, but the screen obscured the bird. He was busy pecking away at decorative wooden trim outside of my office window. So cute and much smaller than the woodpecker I saw a few years back at another apartment. That thing was immense and had a read head, looked like a vicious clown and had a huge wingspan. Shudder. Anyway, wish I had a picture for you, but well, you get the detailed experience instead. :)

I've seen them before, but today was the first time I've known I was seeing a spotted firebug. I learned on wikipedia that they may be the sex champions of the natural world. Their coital joining can last up to seven days!
