Wish me luck with starting my New Year aim for my dear hubby and I.

Today I hope to get him out for our first walk down the the local canal and possibly the river just beyond it. I am hoping to get to the river as the photo opportunity's will be so much better for following the changes as the year goes on. as long as the weather is dry, we will go twice a week to take photo's of the same few spots we pick out.

He will be a bit reluctant to go at first, only 15 to 20 mins walk away, BUT !!!!, I will drag him out today somehow. :) it will just a matter of getting him to go once and then he will see how quiet and peaceful it is down there.

If we are really lucky we will in time catch the Kingfishers that were know a few years back to be thriving well there.

I will then keep a photo diary somewhere, one here, as well as one in a file and a disk. So we can both look back on this as the months go by.

Fingers crossed that I can start this today.

It sounds lovely where you live. I do hope watching nature proves as healing as you hope. We have a pair of hawks which have raised young for two years running now- looking forward to spring to see if they come back is a 'thing' this year. Funny how this sort of thing is intriging- hope your Kingfishers are there and you manage pics of them also!

All the best for both of you with this, and another good way to work up an appetite. :)

We did it, we went for the walk I had planned, he did not realise how calm and peaceful it was down there. We were only out for just over an hour, but that is all I asked from him today.

I took a few photos, not of where I had actually planned, as the footpath was closed due to it needing repair. But we can get there a different way another time.

The fact that I got him to go and is now looking forward to going again, probably on Monday, is what counts. Not only that, we found a café, about half way between the canal and home, so promised him a coffee on our way back next time., maybe even a chip butty too, if he behaves himself. LOL

Amethist. :D

Great stuff Amethist. I'm glad you got out and about - enjoyed the fresh air, and that hubby enjoyed it too.
I don't know about where you are, but here it's cold and frosty, but sunny - the perfect winter's day in my book

Sounds like a wonderful idea, on so many levels.

You may need a collar and a long leash though. To keep tugging him along?

Cold and frosty here too, but clear blue sky and actually warmer in the sunshine than you would think. Defiantly perfect winters day to go out walking, even for just an hour.

We are in West Yorkshire CB, 15 minute walk away from the Aire & Calder Navigation Canal, and the River Aire itself is just past that, over the grass banking.

These are the first of many pictures to be taken. In the first one you can just see the lock gates to the left, as we look up the river. The second is looking to the right down the river, the canal is behind us. The third one is looking left up the river, at a spot further up toward the lock gates. The last one is a long shot of the ponds at the other side of the river, where you can just see the swans on it, the white dots in the middle of the picture. This is where I wanted to go today, if possible.

If you click on the photo's, then click on, open a new window, top right. You can see the pics in larger detail, and you can actually see the swans in the last photo, especially if you click on it to enlarge it further.

Maybe I can get him there on Monday, with the promise of coffee and a chip butty after, how can he refuse,

I missed the Robin sat on a bare tree branch as we walked back, only about 6 foot away from us in clear view. It sat there for ages, but I was too late with my camera. We know now where there are a lot of garden birds on our way down that way, so we will keep our eyes open and be ready next time.

Great pics - beautiful blue sky - thanks for sharing them. Yorkshire is beautiful - love it up there. My parents are from Yorkshire, and I was born there. But I only lived there until I was 2. My grandparents lived there until they died, and we used to visit them, so I remember the area, along with a few holidays in the Dales.

Amethist, I'm really pleased you both enjoyed your walk. My H also drags me and I do feel better for it, it's just such an effort.
Good luck seeing kingfishers, we get them in Shropshire as well - very illusive.
Happy walking

Walking is a wonderful activity. One of the things I miss most during the winter (outdoor activities are limited here).

But I am dying of curiosity.....what is a "chip butty"?
