Sleeping All Day From Prozac

I have been taking Prozac for about three or four months now. I find that it is easing the constant sense of panic a bit, but there is a really unfortunate side effect: I'm feel so drowsy all the time, I would have no problem sleeping 16 hours a day.

I get up, drink a coffee, and three hours later I am lying in bed again dozing off.

The whole point of starting medication was to be able to get more work done. I can't work if I'm sleeping all day. I wish the doctor who wrote the prescription told me that this was a possible side effect.

Anyone else have experience with this? Are there any SSRIs I could potentially switch to that don't cause fatigue?

Personally I think all SSRIs are more trouble than they are worth. Have you considered an SNRI like cymbalta? Was anxiety your predominant symptom?

Yup, nasty prozac, you should talk to your doctor about switching you to something else. They recommend giving meds anywhere from 8-16 weeks to know for sure. But sleeping non stop, and with it not getting any better, then you know this probably isn't the right med for you. When you chose to take depression meds, you learn they are a game of trial and error. There very well could be a med out there for you, but you have to talk to your doctor about switching. Don't just quit taking it before you talk with your doctor.
Good Luck

Thanks, Foref and Amej.

Hmm. I don't really know the difference between and SSRI and an SNRI.

I would say it's equal parts depression and anxiety. I have a longer history of depression (I struggled with it before PTSD, whereas the anxiety is a post PTSD thing).

Yup, nasty prozac
Nasty's a strong word. Have you taken it? Did you switch to something else?

Hello, dingin.
I too started with prozac. Prozac was not a match for me either. I gained 20lbs, tired all the time, & could not concentrate. Also, you need to be weened off. I take generic form of welbutrin (bupropion) which works great. Actually, just my medication increased. Definitely talk to your doctor about any changes of your medicine. Good luck.

I don't feel the need for anonymity, this is Silver. I had taken pretty much everything out there ranging from mild depression meds to bipolar meds (even though I am not bipolar), to discover I am allergic to anti depressants. While I have the same symptoms that most people do from these meds, (for example, Ramer takes wellbutrin, that made me rage, I have read it does that for many others as well), I have extenuating symptoms because of my body's inability to process the way these meds break down in my system. Meds may have the same side effects for people, but people react differently to different meds, and that is why it is trial and error.
I personally would not want to be sleeping all day and would call my doctor asap to try something else.

This is an SSRI? It doesn't make you drowsy? Anything else that differentiates it from Prozac in your experience?[/QUOT...
Wellbutrin is a ndri drug which makes less addictive, less tired, helps with my concentration, & appetite suppression. You can also research it online & talk to your dr

I take something other than Prozac, but I if you are talking about the "zombie feeling" I get it. I feel like I drank a whole bottle of the old Nyquil. Sometimes I roll out of bed at 10-11am, coffee 2 cups, 1 liter of Coca Cola. 2 hours later, I am still trying to wake up. If anything, it has taught me to appreciate the good days. :)

Wellbutrin is a ndri drug
Does it primarily target anxiety or depression?

wellbutrin, that made me rage, I have read it does that for many others as well
Does anyone know if pre-existing anger issues predict who will wind up raging from wellbutrin? Or is it totally unrelated? Anger and revenge fantasies are things I struggle with daily.

Could you tell me what you take, so I don't let anybody prescribe it for me?

You really cannot determine how a drug is going to interact with a person, each of us is different.
We could sit here all day and name drugs, and you might think they would work for you, because they work for person x. This is not the case at all. Only a doctor, who is knowledgeable in each drug and drug class, can tell you which ones they feel will work for you.

Touche. I was just wondering if anyone knew whether there were any documented predictors of who might rage from wellbutrin.

This I don't know about. I told the last doctor I need meds so I can get more work done, and what did he do but prescribe me a drug that makes me sleep all day? My faith in doctors is whittling away daily.
