Black Belts Anybody?

I was thinking about what ArWar was saying about the rank and belt structure and I agree. I think it's more, at least for me, about having goals. It is the one thing that being involved in any Martial Art instills in you. To be able to move forward and be able to learn more you have to accomplish certain things. That aspect is a positive and self affirming mindset, one which can be a great benefit in dealing with PTSD.

Although it never goes away we do or can learn how to deal with it as time goes on. It always seems to come at you when you least expect it. A formidable opponent. A suck ass one too! OOPS!

Yeah I think that having the rank there will give veterans a tangible goal to reach for. Then attaining those goals, I believe, builds self esteem and confidence which in turn helps with depression. And the meditative state of mind that comes with doing kata helps with relaxation and stress relief as well as concentration.
It looks like there is enough interest to try it out and see what happens. Over the next few months I will be working on my building. Since I don't teach at a commercial dojo I am getting a 28X12 building on my property to serve as my dojo. Once it is here I have to finish it out, electrical, sheet-rock, padding, ect. Once I am done with it I will begin getting a program together. In the meantime, if there are any questions feel free to pm me or you can ask here.
Be patient (like us vets are known for our patients lol) this idea is in its infancy and if I am going to do this I want to put forth the best program that I can. I don't claim to be the all knowing and wise grand poobah Sensei. And I am built more like Mr. Miyagi than Bruce Lee. But I am willing to share what I know if it will help my brothers and sisters in the veteran community.

Like the idea.
No clue where to find a partner. Hope to have solved that by the time you have things set up.
Effort appreciated.

Just thought I would check in and let everyone know that I have not forgotten or changed my mind about the program. I have a back-pay check coming to me from the VA that I will be using to fund this idea. I would have already had it but there was a problem with my bank account. VA says it could take up to a month to fix. That was three weeks ago, so something should be happening soon. Once I get that check I will be ordering the building I will use for my training and to film the videos. I am hoping to get started by Halloween. I will keep you all posted as I know something.

You will need a partner for most of the program. When you are asking your friends or family if they would be interested remember to tell them that if they are doing the program with you that they can test for rank as well. The price of the DVD will cover the price for testing for two people. I am still working out exactly what the price will be. Like I said I will keep it as low as I possibly can. And of course if you have any questions you can ask here or pm me.

Single person katas/forms/insert right word here... for fluidity & strength practice would be appreciated!

Especially for those of us whose regular partner will be a few feet shorter, &/or 12, or inanimate.

I realize testing would probably be impossible without a real training partner.

There will be single person kata and some other solo training things. I may also put some stuff on how to build inexpensive training aids. For folks that just can not find a training partner I may come up with a "Solo Practitioner's" rank or something to that effect.

Just an update. My building is set to be delivered the middle of next month. As soon as construction is completed I will start work on the program. It's coming together!
