Admins: Please move thread to appropriate place as I was unsure as to where it should go. Thank you.
I wrote a letter of compassion as part of an exercise in Self-compassion that I read to myself often. I wanted to share it here with all child abuse survivors.
Dear Survivor of Child Abuse (self),
Please don't judge yourself so harshly for things which are outside of your control, your genes, your family history, the things people have said to you and done to you...all were outside of your control and are not your fault.
You are no less of a person or a man/woman because of these problems and issues. Everyone has something they don't like about themselves, but that does not make them any less lovable or desirable. If anything, it makes them more lovable.
You are the whole package and not just some of your parts. You are a good man/woman and you deserve to be loved just as you are, ...faults, flaws and all.
Many of the things for which you are so critical of yourself are things which are not within your control and therefore you have nothing to feel bad about.
I wish you could see yourself as I see you....you are a beautiful person, both inside and out, and I love you unconditionally.
I feel bad for all of the mental and emotional pain you have suffered as a result of things outside of your control, but now it is time to let those things go..... they were lies and half-truths and you were wrongly judged and criticized!!!
It was sick people who lied to you and hurt you and I would like for you to forgive yourself for believing their lies. You did nothing wrong. You are good, lovable, desirable, ....you are enough!!!
You had no way of knowing that these were lies and they knew that, it is how they were controlling and manipulating you. You did not deserve to be treated that way!!!
I feel sad that you were mistreated so badly, it was totally wrong and unfair. You deserve to be loved without condition, you deserved it as a child and you deserve it now that you're an adult!!!
You are precious and priceless, no one can ever take your place as there is only one of you in all time. Love yourself as I love you, and more.
The ugly habits and problems that you developed as a result of trauma were just that and again, outside of your control..it was not your fault then and it is not your fault now!!!
Do your best and be at peace, that is all anyone can ask of you and it is all you can ask of yourself!!!
