Math helps. Can't go anywhere and feel safe anymore. I just spent the last hour cleaning my laundry room to try to distract myself.
1 active shooter in Y Years : X fatality car accidents
The only reason events that almost never happen f*ck with FEELING safe? We don’t know the rules for them. If you lived somewhere with daily shootings, like daily car accidents? You’d calmly go about buying oranges, hearing the report echoing off the walls 2 blocks away, and knowing how far away it is, and what’s in between you, casually calculate how perfectly safe you are, for how long, how likely it is to spill over to where you are, the general direction things are heading, etc. Just like driving a car and minding what’s going on around you, or walking down the sidewalk.
^^^Which is what I remind myself of when the Trix Cereal box is looking a wee bit threatening today,
The shooting is rare, so all senses tuned to it, and alert!!! Ready for action! Still exactly as safe as you were before you knew about it. It’s just the feeling that’s changed. Not how safe you actually are.
