Have You Ever Had A Physical Reaction In Therapy?

Nausea to certain subjects - sexual abuse and sometimes when I try to feel what my inner child feels. And rapid heartbeat when T is asking too many question, I start feeling cornered. I also find myself holding my breath a lot.

I get lightheaded, nauseous, and racing heart is one of my standards...I've hyperventilated before but never during a therapy session and I'm afraid of that happening in front of T. I zone out of course, but she's gotten pretty good at picking that up--noticing sometimes even before I do.

I'd say go with it. If you need to take a break to throw up, do. It's purging that part of the trauma that is "too much to stomach." Or the feelings of disgust or whatever.

Of course, I do trauma therapy with a somatic focus, so physical reactions are expected and worked with, not a separate issue to work around.

In therapy this morning I felt physically sick, like if I talked anymore I would puke and faint.

I'm just wonde...
Hi. Sorry that that happened to you. I hope you are feeling better today. When I was going to therapy for months before my finally first psychologist that understood me abruptly retired at only age 52..... I used to have physical reactions talking about things and I would get so dizzy and sick and faint that the only thing that would help was sitting on the floor of her office and drinking a chocolate milk. My friend would drive me there and when we left I would get sick for hours too sick for the 5 mile car ride home that we would stop a block away from therapy and sit under a gazebo until I felt okay.
