Having A Hard Time Adjusting

I just recently got discharged from sheppard pratt's Trauma Disorders Unit, while I have done well using the skills they taught me to manage my triggers, flashbacks, intrusive thoughts and images, I am having a hard time adjust to everyday life.

I don't thing this has anything to do with PTSD, I had a manic and depressive episode when I was in the hospital, and they put me on lithium which I have not been on for over 20 years. I think its due to my mind being so quite that its like everything I perceive is new to me, its like going somewhere you have never been the world around you is unfamiliar and new. They also put me on nalprexone to manage emotional flashbacks.

Anyone else have an experience like this?

It's actually well known making clinical professionals for the adjustment from an inpatient stay to home to be very difficult, and this is especially true if there has been a big shift in perspective and recovery.

I really struggled for a few weeks after my inpatient stay on a similar trauma unit at a different speciality clinic. It was almost like a culture shock kind of experience leaving that kind of treatment environment.

Creating structured routine and connecting to familiar places and things helped me get through it. So did journaling.

@recoveringfromptsd, i hear you on the adjustment. Not sure if this helps you or not but so far breaking my day up into Morning, afternoon, evening and night helps. With the exception of nighttime (when I am thankfully sleeping), i have about 3-4 things I know I can do (or will just happen, like meal times). It ain't perfect but it is creating some structure to make the day seem less overwhelming. Best to you!
