I am due to see my psychiatrist next Friday to go through my meds etc. When I initially saw him he stated that it would be advisable because of the severity of PTS that I should consider long term therapy. Maybe not every week but once things settle maybe once a fortnight/month or so to have ongoing support. I know it might be a while off yet as I have just started EMDR but when that finishes what do we talk about? Can anyone in long term therapy give an insight into this?

Hi!

In my therapy we talk about issues that pop up in my daily life, and ongoing struggles.

EMDR isn’t going to fix everything. It may help you a lot, but my guess is that you will have ongoing struggles.

In my experience, ptsd is healed best when you go after multiple therapeutic healing modalities. That is, learn DBT skills and CBT skills, and.....so on.

I'm in emdr with one T who helps me dig up my past and decipher how I feel about it and another T who helps with what gets dug up and how I cope with it in my day to day life. I've been doing one or the other (or both) for about 3 years now.

I have been in therapy on and off for decades. As for c-ptsd stuff and deep trauma therapy, less than a year. As for a timeframe, as my therapist and my Mental Health Mentor (who has undergone trauma tx herself) say, it takes as long as it takes. Different for everyone but you can't rush it. Trauma that has been buried and/or happened during developmental stages has a way of hiding in the corners and then oozing out into our daily lives in often troubling ways. I'm committed to doing whatever it takes to embark on the second half of my life in wholeness and wellness and I know I need my experienced guides to help me on this journey. Don't be afraid of long-term therapy as it could very well lead to longer-term life and wellness. You can do this!
