Medical Retirement

New Here
Hi,
I was told a few days ago from my wizard that he wants to run a medical board on me for my PTSD. He want and says I will be medically retired. But I know that is dependent on the board. Anyone with any experience in this have any insight? I am about 5 months from my EAS. I know I will be a med hold but what does medical retirement look like for PTSD? Will I be barred from buying firearms or owning them? I am an avid competitive shooter and I fought for the second amendment, the idea that I cannot own one is appalling. My fear is that there will be adverse things like the example I just mentioned.

Thanks,
DMH, USMC active

PS sorry if the gun issue seems petty or asinine to some members.

I was medically retired at 19 1/2 years for PTSD in 2001. Once I was medically retired I updated my VA claim and (after a reasonably brief process) and was increased to 100% for PTSD, then I filed SSD and (after a lengthy process, including initial rejection and appeal) was awarded SSD. The financial support removes the stress of the workplace and places you in a low stress environment where it is possible to manage PTSD symptoms and participate in appropriate activities and relationships.

In many years of group therapy, I have never heard of a persons existing weapons forcibly being removed from him except if he attempted to carry in an inappropriate place. I have witnessed therapists urge veterans to get rid of their weapons, but there was no force or legal requirement to do so. Nobody has ever checked to see if I have any weapons. I do understand I might not be able to get a CCW or possibly a permit to purchase a new weapon but I have not tested that.

Beg to differ, Ted. The very definition of the 100% rating for PTSD contains very specific language as to whether a person is competant. In order to be 100%, they are saying that you are incompetant and therefore, not allowed to possess a firearm. Perhaps no one in your group has never heard of weapon confiscations, but it could lead to additional charges if they are 100% and arrested with a firearm.

I would check this matter carefully, it could be a big deal if they're caught.

I can't believe the NRA over there. There are mass deaths happening and the voted in President is trying to implement change, and they have a dig at his kids. Who is running your country.

I'm not sure if that's completely true, and here's why I think that. Just the nature of PTSD with it's many symtoms make the incompetance ruling difficult. For instance, if you have a high rating and can't work and get 100% it just means that the condition makes you unable to work. Just as if you were severly disabled and were unable to work. There are other factors to an incompatant ruling.

When I went for my c&b for PTSD they asked if I looked after myself; showered regularly, shaved, brushed my teeth, ect. Also, if I were able to handle my own finances if I received any rating. Guess I'm just saying there are factors in how you're rated and how that will affect; jobs, possession of firearm, ect.

Who is running your country.

They're all politicians and all the same; they have their own agendas. I think the dig at the presidents kids was a low blow, but then no one has any self control when it comes to this stuff.

I think they should just put drugs in the water and make everyone calm and peaceful.

Jar -- Remember the movie from the 1960s entitled "Wild in the Streets"? It had a band called Max Frost and the Troopers. The movie's claim to fame was the teens putting LSD (or other hallucinogens) in all of the drinking water supplies of the USA. That scenario brings to mind the phrase "too stoned to fight"... or do anything else for that matter. Although it might improve the quality of legislation emanating from Washington DC;)

Hmmm.... stoned human or trained seal... makes one pause to consider the possibilities.o_O

Extremists one and all.....90% of people live right in the practical and pragmatic middle. But they are all represented by a bunch of radicals.

I think Tim illustrated the point. What if their was a natural drug or plant that prevented and cured cancer BUT also caused mild Turrets Syndrome? One group would want to ban it outright and another would want to make it compulsory. Because of course nobody is responsible enough to make their own decisions.

I don't trust any side of the coin. It's kind of like having to choose between Stalin and Hitler....Hmmmm.....

Funny...nobody gets upset about Brazil.

Jar,

If the 100% PTSD disability is granted by the VA, they usually also declare the Vet incompetant. Fed Regs. state that an incompetant person cannot own a gun. The VA gleefully hands over their determination to NICS, the folks that approve gun purchases. Here's the latest assault on us...

http://www.lawfirmnewswire.com/2013/01/veterans-gun-rights-an-ongoing-issue/

I'll continue to look for details of the last time they did it. I fully expect them to try to say Vets with Any PTSD rating will be prohibited.

Somewhere down the line, we Americans are going to have to decide if we want a Constitution as our rule of law. It's looking very much like the sheeple are ready to throw it in the shredder.

Edited to add: It would seem to me that there are far more Veterans being gunned down, mistakenly, by police swat teams, than there are Vets commiting crimes with guns.
