If you want to find out who you are, travel to someplace that you’ve never been before, that you’re not familiar with in any way, and see how you act, how you feel, and how you respond. Then you’ll know who you really are.

Been there, done that. It was a super eye opening experience. I acted and felt completely disoriented, lost, but free from all commitments and attachments. I was totally 'myself'. Nobody was influencing me. I loved the organic market, the sunshine, the freedom to walk or drive where ever I wanted to without being seen. I despised the plasticity and 'shopping' for stuff. I didn't have to live up to other's expectations of me. Nobody knew me and I knew nobody. It was so freeing.

Now I am back (unexpectedly) and am balking at those who put expectations on me of being the 'old' me. Of conforming to who they believe I am. I am, of course.....just me. I am not my job, I am not my PTSD, I am not my past experiences. I am just a blonde chick who really needs to go take a shower right now. Thanks for listening....off to get squeaky clean. :p

in some ways that is true Shimmerz, but it really depends on whether you travel domestically or internationally , going to a foreign country can be both an eye opener and in some cases terrifying

I'm going to stick with that image in my head. Nearing 50 and applying for my first passport, so hopefully going abroad in the summer.....unless I can find another excuse not to go ha.. The thought petrified me! My partner has taken me up flying in small plane a lot but the idea of a bigger plane?????. Then the stress of being in a country I don't know at all...and all the possibilities. This really will test me but I'm going for it!

@darrenS , yes, it was a 'new country' move. Many thousands of miles. I think the key, for me, and I am not trying to talk anyone into this, was that all attachments were severed. I knew nothing about anything or anybody.
