Other Drugs Besides Ativan?

I was referring the the Vietnam vet I am in school with. That was part of his return to society treatment in 1972

As far as benzos go, Ativan is actually one of the weaker ones. This does not mean you cannot overdose. Overdosing and addiction are actually fairly common side effects of ativan. For myself, ativan actually messes me up. Meaning I feel groggy in the mornings the night after taking ativan. I was prescribed this stuff for anxiety problems at night that were messing up my sleep schedule. I took ativan for my own sleep aid for two months, and felt myself get addicted. It happened fast, but after two months I was fed up. It was actually not that difficult to quit, but I have quit cigs and a few other substances over the years.

If you can use the Bezo's properly they are a great aid for anxiety, namely Xanax. I hate them and was addicted to them. Now they sit in the cupboard and we use it for occasions where there will be large noisy crowds. We also use them for the dog when thunderstorms and fireworks are around.
The vet actually prescribed them. o_O. The problem though is a dog's metabolism far outweighs ours, admittedly the dog is fairly big, but the dog needed 1 mg of Xanax where I only took .5 of a gram. It's funny seeing the dog lying on the kitchen floor with I swear, a smile on it's face.

Any suggestions for an anti-anxiety medication for someone who has a moderately addictive personality? I know several SSRI's/SNRI's help reduce anxiety therapeutically through out treatment but I am referring to a med that would be useful during panic attacks or extreme anxiety after waking up from a nightmare

Hey Stammer, Alpha or Beta blockers are used to actually reduce anxiety and prevent nightmares. I am on catapres and I swear by it. I actually tried the other day and went off it for a couple of days. I had the attitude that I did not need that medication in my life anymore. Well two days later I was wondering why my hypervigilence was up, my heart was racing, I was grinding my teeth, and not sleeping well (weird dreams). Back to normal now.

Ask your doctor about alpha or beta blockers. The most used are propananol and catapres. They are used for blood pressure but work well with anxiety.

Jimmy, I use Prazosin aka catapress. It's a miracle drug in my opinion because I never thought it would help so much since it was being used off label from a anti-hypertensive. But my question was referring to something fast acting for those really bad oh shit i cant breath this is rock bottom moments. I did a bit of research and asking around, considering im surronded by pharmacy books and medical professionals all day the only thing I've concluded is that the benzo's are the best thing for those situations--so now I need to find/create a system or design to keep my self in check when it comes to over-use/abuse.

Well mate, I hate using it, but I have Xanax (another benzo). I always keep some around. Margaret always has a couple in her handbag along with everything else, minefield there.

I was taught you had to practice desensitizing yourself. Learn how to breath properly and ground yourself, as I have told the guys on here a million times, and what worked for me.
I used to not be able to go anywhere and when I met Margaret, I never went anywhere really, always because there would be noise and a crowd. I had to train myself by going to busy shopping centers and walking through the middle and out the other side. Then I would practice my breathing and tell myself I was home not over there.
Then I would go to the busy shopping centre and buy a coffee, then walk outside and etc, etc.
Then I would go and buy a coffee and sit there till I had drank it, in the busy shopping centre, and etc, etc.

It does not always work mate and there are times where I will take the Xanax or else have a massive anxiety attack which would screw me for days. You just have to not give in mate and be strong.

Shit, listen to me. One minute I am having a whinge about how hard it is, next minute I am being a hippocrit and
telling you to harden up. Damn
