Mrs. Smith decides to take her dog for a walk around 3:00 in the afternoon. She must go before dark because the dog is very peculiar. He stops at every puddle and she has to fill a jug with water for the dog to drink. He drinks exactly four liters of water without stopping (yes, the dog is obviously OCD)! More than 4 liters makes the dog lie down and take a 10 minute nap in the middle of the field. Less than four liters and he digs a hole in the field that Mrs. Smith has to fill back up again before she can move along! She sometimes wonders why she ever bothered to get a dog to keep her company. Mrs. Smith's main problem is that she only has two jugs and neither of them hold exactly 4 liters (or course). One of her jugs holds five liters and the other holds 3 liters. How does she manage to make sure that silly dog gets exactly 4 liters of water every time?

Do the jugs have measurements written up the side eg 250ml, 500ml, I litre or is it more complex than that?

Other thought is if she filled both jugs, put all the water in a large bucket/bowl she would then have 8 litres of water. She would then half the water between the bucket/bowl and another exactly the same at home, making two lots of 4 litres. She would then empty one bucket into the 5 litre jug for day one and the same the next day. The 5 litre jug would be 4/5th's full.

I think I was editing my answer Cat before you posted your answer

Got it I think - half fill both jugs...... 5 litres divided by 2 = 2.5 litres; 3 litres divided by 2 = 1.5 litres; 2.5 litres + 1.5 litres = 4 litres!!!

Fill the 3 litre jug, pour contents into 5 litre jug. Refil 3 litre jug, and again pour contents into 5 litre jug. So 5 litre jug is now full, and 3 litre jug holds 1 litre. Pour away the contents of 5 litre jug. Pour the 1 litre from the 3 litre jug into the five litre jug. The 5 litre jug now holds 1 litre. Fill the 3 litre jug and pour contents into 5 litre jug, which already has 1 litre - voila 4 litres of water in the jug that can hold upto 5 litres.

My way/the answer was ever so slightly different but same concept and same result. The other way:

Fill the jug with 5 liters. From it, fill the jug with 3 liters. This leaves 2 liters in the jug that holds 5 liters. Pour out all the water from the 3 liter jug. Pour the 2 remaining liters from the 5 liters into the 3 liter jug. Then fill the 5 liter jug again. From it, pour into the 3 liters until it is full. 4 liters will be left in the jug that holds 5 liters.

Yep - you get the same answer - what's my prize??? ;)

Okay now I have tried to answer, I will post the only riddle I know.....

Sadly you have died, and you are on your way to either heaven or hell  you come to a cross roads. One way leads to heaven, and the other leads to hell. At the crossroads are 2 sisters (who look like witches). They tell you that one sister always tells the truth, while the other sister always lies. but they don't tell you which witch is which. Obviously, you want to take the road to heaven. And the witches know which way is the right way for you to go. Sadly, you can only ask the sisters one question (the same question), and they will reply. What 1 question do you ask to get you on the right road to heaven?
