Too Paranoid To Get A Job

This really frustrates me. I've, so far, been lucky with the jobs I've gotten. I'm a private worker and at one point got a temp job through a family member, but that's it. I know I need to earn more since I don't charge enough(any more I feel would be ridiculous) but I get too worried about giving someone else my information. I don't know how to get over this and I'm worried this will be what will prevent me from being able to fully be self sustaining..

What is the issue with giving someone your information??? I hate giving out my social security number, and just about everywhere you go today, wants it.

I don't know. I just don't like the idea of having my information out there. I'm worried if I let a bit of my information out then everyone will know it and someone out there will be looking me up and finding that information so they can use it to scare or get to me.. I know it's irrational but I just can't bring myself to try.

You actually have a lot more freedom in such matters than you may think.

Since being stalked I have thought a lot about such matters, how I can prevent such info from being passed around.

Use a company name for such employments, use alternate names such as short forms, use nick names, whatever gets you away from having to use private info. Get a paid for mailbox so then you can use that address and not your personal residence address.

I have known people before that have only used their nick names, didn't even know their real names for years. Well, that is what I would do if I wanted to avoid nosy people for sure.
Get a cellular number to which all calls are forwarded, can do that with Emails too. Can switch prepaid phones, so your number always changes. Can have multiple E-mail accounts and only give out certain Email info to certain people, switch it up, makes it much tougher for someone to put the pieces together.

- Buy a burner phone or real phone for work purposes, only.
- Open a Work-Only email address.
- Use a PO Box as a mailing address.
- Use a nickname, stage name, nome de guerre // at work // keep your legal name only for tax purposes.

That's what I've been doing with my private work but applying for a job where I'm not self managing it. A typical job. I don't think it's legal to put a nickname down. I have to put my full legal name and address.. that's what I'm talking about here. I never put my information if I don't have to.

If you're worried about legalities, consult an attorney. Always.

But, from experience, it's been completely legal in every state I've ever worked in. There's only an issue of fraud if you are intending to evade taxes, child support, etc.; or identity theft if you're claiming to be a different legal person other than yourself (using someone else's social security number, etc.). Everywhere I've lived, as long as I'm acting in good faith, there is no crime.

It is incredibly common, especially amongst women, who often use their maiden name professionally, even though they're married. To the point that partnered attorneys at law have their maiden name on the letterhead, we have ambassadors who use their maiden name, etc. But having made a reputation for ones self under a maiden name is only one of dozens of -legal- reasons people use aliases. It's absolutely no one's business what name you use, or why, as long as you are not attempting to defraud anyone by doing so.

But, for true, I'm just a chick on the Internet. If you're concerned about point of law for your area? Consult an attorney.

Okay, thank you. I will see if I can find one to speak with. It's not that I'm trying to be someone else. The alias was made up by basically putting two and two together to create a name I liked or one that matched me, but the paranoia kicks in where too many people associate my name with my personal life, or where they can find me and track me down.. I just want to keep things organized.

Example:

When I am called Jeanette it is only in therapy and no where else.

When I am called Marie, it is with this specific friend and her family and no one else, but they can call me Marie in public. (I don't have many friends. She is the only one but the name Marie is extending a bit to her other friend that I'm getting to know.)

When I'm called Sam, it's for my clients. But I'm slowly getting paranoid about using the name Sam now because my number is given to my clients. Even though I have a separate email account I still get nervous about it and am tempted to change things but I know it'll get confusing for the clients..

Though a while ago someone mentioned to use a different phone and I will definitely look into that if I can afford it. I'm sure I can find a cheap typical text/call phone somewhere. Thank you for the suggestion.
