Hi Everyone,

I sort of stumbled upon your forums while doing some research this evening about the emotional disassociation I've been experiencing for roughly the last 6 months, associated with the PTSD I currently live with.

I've been avoiding therapy for several reasons, but mainly because I'm a Sheriff's Deputy; I'm afraid it will negatively impact my career if I go to an in house Psychologist.

This is how I found myself here. I figure doing this is better than doing nothing at all, and perhaps I can warm up to the idea of seeking therapy in the future.

Also interested in reading other's stories and talk to some people who can actually relate. I've been feeling pretty isolated lately despite having friends and family around who try their very best to support me.

Regards,

You should feel free to go to therapy :) it would be descrimination for it to affect your job. Its your life and you should freely seek the help you need :)

Welcome to the forum, SMC.

In my own PTSD recovery I believe I have benefited most from small and persistent steps. Congratulations on the small step you took with this post. Hope you keep on stepping.

Welcome aboard.

Hi SMC_1987,

Welcome to MyPTSD forum!

Even though seeking help shouldn't make a difference in one's profession, unfortunately the reality is that is can. This forum has a lot of self help information and is a good source for finding books that address many of the topics related to PTSD. There is always the option of private therapy, and there are clinics that charge on a sliding fee schedule.

I hope that you find the information and support here beneficial to your healing.

Take care.

Debbie

Thank you everyone,

I have already found lots of very useful information on this site. I'm very glad I happened upon it.

Unfortunately yes, seeing an in house therapist can affect my career due to the nature of my job, we all have to pass psychological evaluations that focus intensively on things like this (mind you when I did the evaluation I was a much younger, eager, fresh-minded, person who never really saw anything bad in her life, haha). Its certainly not that I'm a danger to myself or the public, and I can still carry out my duties properly and professionally. If that were ever a question I would most certainly turn in my badge. Its more so my personal life/relationships that have been severely effected over time, I seem to function perfectly fine at work but "crash" when I get home.

Anyway, that topic is for another thread I'm sure, thank you again for the encouraging welcome! Looking forward to finding some positivity from some good people who have been brought together by something terrible.

By the way, its nothing personal that I don't use my real name. I would just rather stay anonymous for peace of mind.

Regards,

The anonymity helps me allot, too. I don't have any clear reasons why, but it frees my flow considerably. Why ask why?
