I just... @Lauren Taylor , I very much do not want to leave this in such a negative way. I think it's great for you to pursue your education. I wasn't going to give up. I still haven't given up, but it's been a bumpy road. If I had known I had PTSD while I was still enrolled in school, I might have planned, & had some coping strategies in place. That is what I mean. It is excellent that you are here, communicating with others who have dealt with PTSD and education together, as you go forward.

I'm very sorry I'm just now responding. these notifications is sort of confusing because it shows chat most of the time. I really thank you so much for your advice it means so much to me it really does

Education was a struggle. Compassionate profs/admin permitted basic accommodations: tests in quiet room, few people. Learned to vet courses and not take anything with a group/partner req. Got through - not stellar, but got through.

Of course, no apologies necessary. I was feeling a "don't go to sleep mad" kind of pressure, but that was my own self, not because of you.

It seems like there are lots of people to advise you in more helpful ways, but I am here, rooting for you.

@Lauren Taylor: I myself have been going to college for the past three years, and was diagnosed right in the middle of my first year. It totally shook up everything I knew, and honestly I failed classes trying to find my balance. The biggest helps for me were adjusting to doing online classes only, so as to limit interactions and make the schedule flexible to my needs, and talking to my school's disability office. Any school can set up accommodations for you with a therapist's letter, and it can make all the difference!

I mean I'm trying as hard as I can. I use to be smart in math and other subjects. now I'm beginni...

I completely understand how you feel, however don't get discouraged. You are still just as smart as you were before, you just have a lot of other junk clouding your mind. At least that's what I try to tell myself! I'm a cashier and have to count change for nearly any customer, and if they try to spark up a conversation I lose my count every single time lol

same thing happens to me!!! I was also a cashier and I also get confused in mental math. its like im slow and I know I am not. I can count but I guess because of the distraction.

Yes, yes, yes!!!

I was in college when I started getting big flashbacks of my childhood (irrational fear of anger/yelling became understood). My grandfather (only father-figure) died in my first semester and then I ended up in an emotionally abusive relationship second year. I never suffered physical abuse by my ex, but the emotional manifestations were largely physical (Tremors, arthritis-like pains, IBS).

I was signed up for a 3-year environmental course which involved a lot of math, chemistry and biology. Many of those courses became very difficult under the mental stress of my situation and I opted to finish the 2-year degree (barely) instead of sticking it out for the intended 3 and possibly dropping out. My professors were very supportive and they are probably the only reason I was able to finish at all.

I then took an entire year off both school and work before I was able to leave my Ex and actually face my problems. That was 2014 and even now I wouldn't be prepared to try again. I was always really good with numbers but still get very scrambled and confused because there are too many other things going on in my head, even making change sometimes stumps me for a moment and I get distracted easily.

Take your time to try and sort through things. If you want to do it all now then kudos to you, you are very strong for doing so! Your brain may just prioritizing other things right now and it can make focusing on education more difficult, but there's nothing wrong with that. Communicating with your professors and faculty will be a big help, they will often give you extra opportunities to improve if you simply ask :)
