What Did You Eat And Drink Last?

Vegan Reuben Sandwich & French fries & super creamy cool ranch.

Wow ok. Makes me want to look at an American Chinese menu.... I shall go and Google one.

LOL. Nope! You (almost*) never see that dish over here. Kind of like Bahn Mi is the luscious side effect of the French colonizing SE Asia (Baguettes stuffed with Asian BBQ? Hell yah!), a lot of European Chinese communities use bread in place of tofu ...But... The tens of thousands of Chinese we brought over to build our railroad system in the 1800s means that Tofu has been a staple here in the US (in Asian communities) for a couple of centuries.

So that's a fusion dish that while staple in the EU, the closest we come is either a dim sum dish (deep fried tofu stuffed with shrimp... Which I would guess is where prawn toast came from, substituting the tofu for toast "Crispy Skin" Chinese Stuffed Tofu) or an American-Chinese dish known as "Honey Walnut Prawns" (batter dipped deep fried shrimp, in a sweet & sticky sauce, garnished with sesame seeds).

The batter dipping? Super American-Chinese! Sooooo many things are batter dipped, deep fried, and swimming in various sauces. Orange chicken, General Tso's chicken, Honey Walnut Prawns (or chicken), Sweet & Sour Chicken/Pork/Shrimp, etc.

In American-Chinese most things are either deep fried, or stir fried. Dim Sum is an entirely different class (and usually only seen in cities with China Towns) and has "real" -aka not fusion- regional Chinese restaurants.

Our "standard appetizers" over here include : Deep Fried Spring Rolls, Deep fried Crab-Rangoon (wontons with crab & cream cheese), Pot Stickers (like Japanese gyoza), Neon Red BBQ pork slices, HumBao or other dumpling, chicken wings, Hot & Sour or Egg Drop or Won Ton soup. Sometimes one sees fried rice, fried noodles, or mu-shu on the appetizer list.

* Because of the warring in China in the 1800s & early 1900s our country has different provincial splits. West Coast USA is mostly Southern China Cantonese style (like the UK, because of the whole you guys owned/leased HongKong until just recently), while the East Coast USA is more ShangHai/BeiJing, & our Midwest is more Hunan/Szeschwan. <<< If I'm remembering correctly. >>> One WILL sometimes find shrimp toast in NewJersey & NYC, but I think that's that's mostly because of the JFK-Heathrow connection. I don't think it made it over here until the 1980s / 3rd wave of Chinese immigration?

Spoiler: Is she still talking? For real? STFU Friday
:whistling::laugh::angelic:

I could quite imagine that sesame prawn yoast was a fusion dish - toast very much being a European thing an all - found this bit in Wikipedia and reading there - well it sounds like the sesame seeds is particular to the uk which I didn't know at all.

Had a look at an American Chinese menu in lafayette cause it's the first US city that came to mind

I had never heard of Lo Mein, we call it Chow Mein and what you call Chow Mein we just call Chow Mein with crispy noodles

Never heard of Mu Shu or Yat Gaw Mein or Moo Goo Gai Pan

Love the name egg drop soup! Really love it Nicely descriptive. And never heard of it before.
We call it chicken n sweetcorn soup... and add chicken n sweetcorn to it :D - or crab n sweetcorn

Had heard of general tso but didn't know what it was just knew it was something served in American Chinese

Am assuming Meon Red BBQ Pork is Char Siu

One thing I'm sad about - even though I love lots of the fusion Chinese dishes I feel like I'm missing put on real Chinese food.... like if I go to a Vietnamese or Japanese or even Indian restaurant I'm more likely to be able to find one that's at least a bit authentic...

Maybe that's changing now
