Hi all,
We have decided to bring my dad home from the institution he is in tomorrow as he will be at risk of servere covid 19. He has a history of being abusive and my ptsd goes haywire when I'm around him. My workload has increased and I will need to be functional so I can't afford to spiral, but I can feel myself spiralling. I feel as if my mum and I are knowingly putting ourselves in a dangerous life or death situation (probably not true) and I am having difficulty holding panic at bay. Any advice or support would be welcome.

What a terrible situation to be in... it's no wonder you're already feeling anxious.

I would suggest severely limiting your contact with him to only essential interactions. Also, remember to take care of yourself, and do things to soothe your soul. More so than before, you'll need to be kind to yourself.

If Dad starts acting-up, it might not be a bad idea to let him know that you didn't have to bring him home; you can always take him back to the institution, if it becomes too much.

Remember: We can't take care of others properly, if we neglect to care for ourselves.

Sending thoughts of peace and tranquility. ?

Set some boundaries within your home, such as having a room (e.g. your bedroom) that your dad is not allowed into, so that you always have a safe place away from him to retreat to.

I would also make it clear that your workload has increased, and that work time must be free from disruptions.

Make sure you give time for self care - indulge in something nice for you at the end of a big work day?
