My boyfriend is an Army veteran suffering with combat ptsd. We've run into a problem.. he wants his family home, and also wants to be by himself. I was wondering if anyone has had similar issues and how do you get through them? He's an amazing man, and a great father. I just need help figuring out how to give him what he needs..

That is a really tough one. I can see where he is coming from. It helps us to have loving family around us, but at the same time we want to be alone because it is easier if we only have to worry about ourselves. We love having family around, but at the same time we want to be alone so we can protect our family from us.

Perhaps he could schedule some away times for himself - where he can be away from the house and get some space to recharge, and then return when he's ready. For example, when I go on trips with others, I always plan a few hours away for myself at a bookstore or coffee shop to recharge.

My sufferer goes through these ups and downs... it's up to you, really. I try to make him go on trips by himself, he also kicked me out of thr house one day every weekend "for me", but I wasn't as keen on that. Lol

A balance of both us helpful.

My vet is the same way. One of the best things for our relationship was when I took an out of town job and got my own place in the new town. We see each other every weekend. Obviously this isn't a feasible option in most cases, but the space was what made him feel more at ease -- both physical and emotional space.
