Hobbies - Mental Diversions

After getting out of the clink this summer I was in serious need of mental distraction. Lucky for me, the ex and one of her friends had something.

Her friend's father had dies several years ago, her mother a couple of years ago and their house had stood empty since. Her father was one of those Depression Era guys who kept everything. He also had a brass foundry (also laying fallow). At home he had a mini-foundry that he used to make artisan brass works (hose bib handles shaped like animals, sculptures, and the like).

So her friend hires me to clean up the place. 3 20 cubic yard dumpsters of trash in the yard, there was a garage completely packed full of boxes and crap. After digging the garage out enough to move around I found an entire shop worth of industrial tools: 8" bench grinder, 20" Delta/Rockwell metal/wood bandsaw, 17" Delta/Rockwell drill press, DeWalt Radial Arm Saw, double arm polisher, Delta Unisaw, several bench and pipe vices, cutting torches and a MIG welder, shop air compressor, and a shit-ton of hand tools. A treasure trove of 1940s and 1950s cast iron shop tools. That are heavily used, rusted from years of un-use.

After finding these beauties, I asked her if she would be willing to trade some of my work for some of these tools and she agreed. While I have done contracting and architecture pretty much my whole life, I've never been much good at electronics/electrical or mechanical work. Sure, I can pull wire through a house and wire up outlets...but electrical motors? I can change my oil and spark plugs, but break down an engine? But looking at all these classic tools that you just can't buy anymore — sure you can buy a 20" band saw, but not one that will be here in 50 years...

Now I have a new hobby.

The first one I decided to undertake was the Dayton Electric 8" Bench Grinder. Plug was toast, switch was toast, she was in pretty sad shape.

Here she is prior to any work.

After the breakdown, paint stripping, de-rusting.

I then gave it a coat of primer and two coats of paint. Replaced the switch and power cord and all internal wiring, replaced the bearings, balanced the shaft runnout, greased her up and reassembled. Started right up and cleaned up a beat up old chisel just like she should.

And completed

Next on the list is the band saw.

Wow Fargo thats a great job! im very impressed.
Thanks Red, the only part I'm not happy with is the name plate. I have researched a method of doing an acid etching from a photoshop image, but I'm still looking for a decent image of the Dayton name plate to clean up and use...

Gearhead Goldmine!!!! We must have been related in another life, Fargo. I'd be doing the same damn thing! Hell, I BEEN doing the same thing since I was a kid. I'll do some web searches to see if I can find a place for the name plate. How cool!

Gotta say it is both a psychological and financial mine. Fixed up some of these things can fetch a pretty good price. But for me, they are going to populate my garage and once they are fixed up I'm gonna start making furniture and such. I've always like the smell of cut wood, I like working with my hands, and I like designing things... If I can have it make a semi-decent living it just might be the thing.
Work from home (no driving). Check.
Work by myself (no other assholes to deal with). Check.
Have a bunch of bitch'n machines (doing my bit for the environment by bringing back to life machines that have significant eco-debt already in them and giving them another 50 years of life). Check.
Use big screaming machines that could cut off digits (a little bit of adrenaline). Check.
Create a bit of beauty in the world. Check.

Great ideas!! My husband thought of flipping cars but honestly he doesn't know anything about fixing cars and I would be doing everything myself, the idea of just opening a shop would be awesome, I fix rigs for people all the time it would be nice to get paid for it.

This thread is very enlightening! When I got diagnosed, I tried every hobby under the sun to distract myself. I have since found by focussing on something I used to love, I have a better chance I continue

I play classical guitar after having been in bands playing jazz and R & R. Got tired of bailing the bass player out of jail. I taught for a while too.

Fargo,

You might take a look at making kids toys. The bigger ones like rocking horses and such. It won't make you rich but it might pay some bills. You can find plans and schematics on the net. Just a thought.

Bad ass hobby. Too bad that sort of thing is what I do for a living these days. If you ever need OEM parts, let me know. I keep a boneyard of industrial equipment both at home and work.

I'll have to post a pick of the ultrasonic probe I just rebuilt. Not sure what the thing is intended for, but I found it in a disused corner of the shop. It looks like a giant soldering pen. I have been using it to help the Kroil get into rusted fasteners and to mix the perfect chai tea...

While sideways, and not near as pretty as your work, Fargo, I converted a Sears 3/4 hp 10 Gal compressor to sit atop an electric water heater tank giving all I need for painting or air tools. I'm tool crazy. If it makes noise, spins, looks shiny or a number of other things I want it. There should be a treatment modality for tool fixation.
