Sleeping With A Weapon

I do. We do I should say. We endured a home invasion. We where held at gunpoint. If I do sleep at all I sleep with a weapon and a cell phone.

I used to have over 40 loaded guns in various locations all over my home. After 20 years, I am down to 5 guns, only 2 loaded and ready. One is a .45 1911. I sleep with it in my hand. I have never had any issues with it. It did help me with a break in one time. The other is a shotgun loaded with 00 buckshot. (Mossberg m-590)

I do not mean to freak you out but with all the home invasions going on today i dont blame you. "Sleep in a clown suit" Now thats great. Really it is. We endured a home invasion a few months ago. If I had my weapon at my side he would have been a dead robber instead of one that got away.

I used to sleep with a knife last summer. I justified it by acknowledging that I lived in a bad neighborhood (which it was; the place was broken into in broad daylight while I was still there), but even knowing it was a bad neighborhood I know I was using that as kind of an excuse. Like medicating an alcoholic with booze, if that makes any sense; like I'd allowed myself to move into a bad area because that would make it okay to be the constantly hyper vigilant person I was.

My roommates and I moved into a safer area, and I bounced around for a bit in different places, none of them in bad areas. I eventually was able to stop sleeping with my hand around a knife hilt and I think a lot of that had to do with living in a safer place. Are you making any plans to get out of where you are at?

jellymint,

That is poetry to me! Expressive...passion...emotions...it part of being human. It seems like you embrace that...only you hold the answers.

To answer your question, I got rid of all my weapons when I was Honorably Discharged from my beloved Corps. I do have several knives..but all I use them for is to slice watermelons for my spinach salad. I found out, and as silly as it may sound, because of the fact that being 'distant' is a symptom of PTSD...at times you have to distant yourself from them memories anr mind set.

Its evident you have a 'nitch' in writting...embrace that!

I don't keep weapons because I've already come up from nightmares with my girlfriend's throat in my hands. It scares the shit out of her AND me. It's item #1 on my therapist's list of things to deal with.

My thought is this: (1) A weapon is more dangerous to people you love and are in your house than it's EVER going to be for a home intruder that's already got you asleep. (2) I don't care HOW close you got the weapon under your pillow. You're already dead. (3) The weapon is against a SUPPOSED fear and will NEVER get used against it. If the weapon is used at all, it will probably be used against a loved one by accident. (4) get rid of the weapon if you think your supposed fear is less important than killing your loved one.

For me, the REALITY is that no helicopters are going to come into Boston and kill everyone. My FEAR is that they will DO what they did 20 years ago in Beirut.... but my FEAR isn't reality. I KNOW this. I'm separate from my fear.

Get RID of what you think is a weapon. It isn't.

It is funny that I used to sleep with weapons nearby. I have a collection of samurai swords and other period swords. I was missing one the other day and realized that I used to sleep with a black scabbard katana under my bed, and thats where I found it after all this time.

Hey, Gamereign555! A Katana is hard to use when you're sleeping in a bed: By the time you're attacked, the sword is too far away and, btw, there's not much on how to use it when you're already being attacked. ;) That said, it DOES feel good to have SOMETHING.... except, some of us see a threat when there isn't one and a weapon ends up hurting or killing someone close to us by accident.

True Tabula, and one of the reasons why I don't sleep with a weapon anymore is I find it irrational. A katana is hard to use while sleeping in your bed, but so is everything else 'you are sleeping after all'. But if I heard somebody coming in then I would be ready. Other than that I also have a roman sword reproduction, and that one is particularly easy to use. Yes people can get hurt with weapons people keep in their homes. A debate I don't care to engage myself in right now.
