Dave, sorry to come late to this conversation, but what you said to start this thread struck a chord in me. I found that after coming home from five years in some really shitty places, the most interest most people could work up to try and understand my experience was to ask me either how the food was or how the weather was. As though somehow that would explain the whole thing, without them actually having to listen to anything unpleasant. It was more than a little frustrating, and left me feeling completely isolated.

But I'll tell you this...when people would ask me why I would still go back to Afghanistan at my age, I would always tell them I went for the Joes. I went because, in a time when most 20 year olds were sitting on their Mom's couch playing video games, there were thousands of young men and women - younger than my own sons and daughters - living in conditions most Americans would not believe, working harder than most Americans will ever work, facing danger every day. And wherever I went, they usually had a smile on their face and a sense of humor that those who haven't served will never understood. I went because all those young men and women seemed to me to be the best we have to offer. Which means - you're the best we have to offer.

So thanks to you Spc. Dave for what you did and for who you were. You are not alone.

It's me that's always late to the party.....Reading through this thread makes me think how far I've come and much farther I need to go.

But that's another rant to save for another day. Welcome, Specialist. Welcome home.

CG,

We already have one. It's called Arizona. You can't throw a rock without hitting someone who's been in some sort of service or other. I think it's the (useta been) wide open spaces is good for getting the hell away from the beast. And we've got em' all...WWII, Korea, VN and now, we're being inundated with new Vets of the current wars flocking to our universities. Thank you, G.I. Bill!!!

I try not to think poorly of those flocking to Phoenix and then infiltrating north, cause I "crossed the border" in 70' and haven't looked back. It's been good for and to me.

I've been looking into flagstaff. My mother moved to Yuma but I think that's to close to Mexico for me.

CG,

PM me if I can help in your planning. I'll warn ya', housing prices are ridiculous. Roger on Yuma, I feel too close to the border being 300 miles away.
