Do you know what Proof on your liquor bottle stands for? In the terms of the agreement for sailors on the English fleet was their rum ration. Included in that was the ability to ask for Proof the rum had not been watered down. Proof was pouring rum on gunpowder which would not ignite if the alcohol content was too low....which is why the Proof number doesn't match the alcohol percentage.
