My New Therapist Terminated Me

Nighthawk, I'm sorry you're dealing with these issues of trust and feelings of abandonment.

I can say from my own experience that when I chose to go along with what my therapy team thought I needed, I really saw a lot of change for the better in my symptoms and overall functioning. The skills I learned in DBT have been invaluable, but it certainly wasn't fun. I also quit after 18 months of it - or whatever the time was - but I also had arrived at a place where I felt I had learned what I could from the group.

Essentially, there was nothing intellectually challenging in my DBT group that would have prevented anyone I know from participating. That is, beyond the PTSD resistance/trust issues, but those are emotional. But each session we shared an issue that came up in our lives, and the DBT skills that could help with such a situation the next time were pointed out. Nothing intense. Certainly nothing more difficult than just participating on this board, mental-wise.

We had a few people in there with low IQs, some with very poor education, but the skills being taught are just commonsense things that anyone can do. Things I as a parent taught my children when they were babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and into the primary years. But I never was taught those things in my childhood so I had to practice them.

DBT is not a trauma-sharing group. Unless we reveal our diagnosis, nobody knows why we are there. We can always 'pass' if something is too triggering, and no issue is made of it. My issues were just being in a room with other people, heh.

You said your learning issues would require accommodation. Can I ask what you perceive you wouldn't be able to get or understand? Because you are far too smart to be beyond anything intellectually informing in DBT. I can record my individual therapy sessions but there's no way I'd have ever participated in any group which records any of us, so I can understand why that wouldn't be considered a "reasonable accommodation" as it would violate HIPAA here in the states.

Handling the emotions of physically sitting through the process was very challenging for me, especially at first. Once I learned that it's really just about learning some skills and doing some very basic practice, that helped.

Please don't sell yourself short because there is nothing you 'lack' cognitively that would prevent you from understanding the curriculum. As to the other barriers, only you know what your level of tolerance is.

I do hope you find the courage to express yourself to the therapist. You deserve to be heard, regardless of whether or not they agree.

This is not DBT therapy. This was radically open DBt never the less. Alll screwed up im ny head. Def feel annd sence the loss of the T I have had for 3 years

It stinks that from day 1 she didn't tell you that both group and individual therapy is required. IMHO this is a failure on her part.

I've looked into various DBT programs in my area and 2 of the 3 required group therapy. The third was willing to substitute a second individual session a week instead.

I think DBT is very helpful. I hope that you can learn these skills in another format. I have been learning the skills on my own as I'm not much of a group person either.

DBT sucks and after my exp I am not a fan of the modality or the confined space they try and shove you in. THis was Radically Open DBT and my opinion remains the same. Anything involving the word DBT and I are not compadible

what happened in the end NightHawk? And did the other therapist, the one you got on well with, stay with you? And did you find someone else as well?

I bet. I am in a similar-ish position in that I need to start looking for a new T and have had no luck so far (met some amazing simpletons with very sweet intentions but severely out of their depth )
I am glad you are still with the previous one. that must help.
good luck with it.

That's just repugnant really. Is she a pyschiatrist, or pyschologist....or just counsellor/ therapist? just curious because that is so unprofessional.

I think a professional should always be looking to accomodate YOUR unique needs, not the other way around for god's sakes. Mine took the time to implicitly understand me, she gears treatments to my personality and realizes facts like I don't like being around other's etc. I'd say out of 8? pysch..sts I met, 1/2 were obviously suffering some sort of mental health issues themselves or were just completely lacking in general intelligence or social skills.

It is not a well regulated profession when it comes to counsellors or "therapists", easy 100 bucks an hour for many who are completely unsuited for it.

The one who did that had a masters degree in socialwork. Just makes me sooo scared to move.
That would scare me too!

We'll I don't blame you for having reservations, but having considerable experiences with therapy, I think you'll be well schooled to recognize a great one when he/she comes up, and run from the quacks....

Via a text msg and im still in shock. I thought it was going well. I want to know if this is enough to...

Wow, you go there to get help with a disease, I would say that at the least a meeting should have been in place between patient and therapist, reasons for possible termination should have been discussed.

How else could you possibly learn about the why and if there is something you did wrong or if there is something the therapist was doing was wrong. At the very least an explanation of the situation should have been forthcoming from your therapist.

Today I really have come to the conclution that therapy is a lie everything about it. Mainly the so called relationship. Cause when you done you just walk out the door right. Why should I bloody well pay for a fake precception of a relationship. Hurting badly today
