Ending long term therapy and managing the loss of the therapeutic relationship

I stopped seeing my T last November because he had to take time off. It was a shock at first but because i was busy i just got used to it and was stable enough to deal with it. He asked in March if I would like to resume and at the time because I was juggling different balls of commitments I said no because I was doing quite well. He said I could go back whenever I wanted though.

It was a good decision I believe. Sometimes I still feel like I might need help or support but I just deal with it myself or speak to a friend or phone the samaritans. I had been in therapy roughly the same time as you @Movingforward10 !

I believe you will be ok my friend. Before the therapy ended I was seeing him twice weekly.

I also recently ended with a long term therapist, partly by my own choice, partly just because life dictated that I had to. It was emotional, and I felt sad at first. But like @Survivor3 Ive just stayed busy and it had been surprisingly nice to know that I am stable enough to do this on my own. I still want to restart at some point, but it feels like a choice rather than a necessity.

There is definitely life after therapy and I'm really glad you mentioned that because it's rarely stated or believed, it's really important to know because for everyone here and round the world "in therapy" don't know that's possible!!! They (we) can't even picture it.

Life after therapy is really good!!!

We spend years trying to dissect our problems and ailments without knowing it's transforming us like the proverbial caterpillar into a butterfly! That's to be celebrated
