What animals did you see today?

I like animals, I think a lot of us here do. One of the little things that can take your mind off the uglies, for a little bit.

Thought I’d start a general thread, so, what was the last animal you saw? (Or heard)? Could be wildlife, local animals, or the pets in your house. Were they up to something? Everything is welcome, doesn’t have to be anything spectacular.

I’ll go first, I’m looking after my sister’s cat, heard a loud bump upstairs, was extremely surprised to see her chasing a butterfly, red admiral I think. She’d got it under some furniture, I managed to scoop it up quite easily, it looked a little beat up, but I got a really good look at it standing on my hand, and it was ready to fly again within a few seconds. I was standing near the window and it went on its way, unprompted.

Pretty cool, I’m glad it was OK, I haven’t seen a butterfly so close before. The cat really had it before I interrupted, so was meowing a lot and looking around for it where she had been catching it, which was funny given she is so quiet, normally.

I have deer that bed down about 50 feet above my house. They are Coues deer, a small form of white tail that only lives in the southwest. They have been coming out between rain storms today.

Here is one from a few days ago.

Saw a flock or gang of 7 turkeys on a run yesterday. All female, minding their business on the right side of the sidewalk, walking through dry desert grasses, wildflowers, and weeds. What is particularly odd about this is that last week, much further down along the path, a had a sighting of 7 all female turkeys!
Sightings were probably around 10-20 miles apart.

I don’t know how likely it is that this is the same exact 7, but I like to think they could have been the same exact gang.

Wow! I didn’t know about that subspecies of whitetail… do you find they’re fairly tolerant of people, where you are?

I don’t live in America, so I’ve rarely ever seen a turkey in-person, never mind wild ones… the idea of large wild birds roaming around like they do is pretty cool to me, though. Interesting that they could be the same gang.

We get other galiformes, like pheasants, but they’re very timid, strictly rural birds, still a treat to see.

I think hey have been habituated to humans so they don’t seem to mind people. If I step outside and one is near by it will freeze and we look at each other. If I move it will trot away not full out. Sometimes Lulu will bark like crazy if she hears one walking by.

I adore animals (such a good thread idea @Dark.Green.Feathers !)... we recently bought our first ever cat - I gave it as a present to my son - and I'm obsessed !! She's a siberian cat and she's also very clever and fairly easy to train. She comes when I call her and she follows me pretty much everywhere. Doesn't like being cuddled too much but loves being close. Animals are great for healing...

Pigeons, short haired black cat and grey tabby cat
I’ve seen that some nice native species of pigeon live over in Australia, do you get any near your home or is it mostly rock doves?
I saw a pretty black tabby the other day.

Sweet, similar to my sister’s cat, I’m enjoying her company at the moment. It’s nice learning how they communicate with you.
