I'm Going to Stir The Pot - Cultures

Well, it has been a few days since I check my small post in an effort to stir up the pot. My, My did I ever create a discussion. I see the point of all who posted and can agree and disagree with everything said. However, I still need to point out the initial point that this country(US) needs to take a very close look at the immense quanity of doctors from the middle east that have come to the US over the past several years. I feel that since the recent tradgey in Scotland, the attempt in London, and the link that ties them together seems to be some of the same people---the authorities need to be doing a closer check on the large influx of middle eastern doctors into our country. Just scares me and causes me to think, that's all. It did not even occur to me that this would be a prejudious issue. Seems like a cold hard fact to me. Guess I'll stir the pot just a little bit more

I here you herc.... people should not even mention prejudice or discrimination when they talk about these things in general, unless blatant derogatory comments are made which would make it such. Go figure... PC gone made basically, everyone jumps before a comment is made.

Anthony---I am so over having to be so PC I tsure ws not my intention to step on any Sensitive toes. Why are people so sensitive anyway? A fact is a fact and they need to get over themselves, in my opinion. And as we all know I love expressing it and stiring the pot! ! !

Yep, if you find that one out, please tell me too... cause I'd love to know. Political correctness is just stupid nowadays, where you have people being prejudice standing up and saying its not prejudice, or racist, for some things, yet someone who it doesn't even involve with more power and influence, insists it is. Go figure...

I see Jim and I are guilty of misreading the original question and commenting on something entirely different! I would not say we personally are "PC" by any means, but moreso inclined to not judge unless we have all the facts in front of us. As the result of Jim's military career, we have lived all over the world, including time spent in two Muslim countries (Cyprus for 2 years, Saudi Arabia for 3) We have seen good and bad people in every country we have resided in, and thus are hesistant to make any sweeping statements. However, it seems we have missed the point of this thread.

Regarding the current issue in the United States, I don't feel qualified to answer at present as it was not something I was aware of until I properly read this thread. Truth be told, we seldom watch the American news, as quite frankly it disgusts us. It is a bit off topic, however I do agree with what Evie has said and Anthony's reply. No government is innocent with regards to terrorism. It is unfortunate that innocent civilians pay the price, however America has been a bully overseas, not unlike the Soviet Union in its heydey, or the British Empire of years past. Anytime one nation tries to enforce its values and beliefs upon another weaker nation, there is apt to be repercussions.

In any event, I apologize for misreading your question Herc, perhaps I will do a bit of reading on the topic and then return to give a more informed opinion.

Okay, I haven't read all of the comments, but I'm going back to something that was said earlier in this post... I have no problem with the colour, creed whathaveyou of any doctor. I have no issues surrounding race etc. In my view, you get dicks in any profession unfortunately. Some are worse than others, some are plain abusive, some are absolutely outrageously unethical. Some can be trusted, some can't. I think spotting those by their behaviour is the only way when it comes to my personal treatment. I am open minded but I trust my judgement. It is worrying that some of the english terrorists were doctors, but it doesn't worry me that they were educated people who were doctors as such. What worries me more is that universities (where other bombers learned bomb making skills) are giving their teaching of how to make bombs to everyone and anyone. I know information is out there, and I admit I don't know a lot about what I'm talking about right now, but my opinion is why make it easy to gain such information?? If nuclear bombs were never created, the nuclear threat would not exist. If guns were tightly controlled, or illegal (as they are in this country), there would be less gun crime.

Maybe that is too simplistic a view. I guess we can't control minds, humans are creative and we advance technology and someone out there will create something that could be used the wrong way. There will always be crime, war, murder, there always has been. In one sense, we need to protect a person's country because there are always rotton apples in the basket. But sometimes I wish I lived in a time where technology was not so advanced, because everything can be abused and used the wrong way.

However, on a seperate note, I have to say one thing that I do find irritating is when I have seen many professionals who are foreign and they don't speak good english. I'm trying to tell them my symptoms and biggest problems, and they are not understanding, and I am not understanding what they are saying. I do find it ridiculous to be sitting in front of a professional whose job is largely involving talking, and they can't actually understand or be understood because of language barriers. It's nothing against the person... but it defeats the point of seeing a psychiatrist/psychologist etc. It must be as frustrating for them as it is me, but it's my life it affects.

Oh yes I agree most wholeheartedly with this Lisa. A psychiatrist who doesn't speak proper English is quite worthless in my opinion, as their main objective should be to communicate well with the patient. An amusing yet not so amusing example occurred with my nephew David not long ago. David has schizophrenia, and his parents took him to the ER because he was delusional. The attending psychiatrist knew some English, but had recently come from another country and was not aware of western pop culture. So, when David told the psychiatrist he had seen Robbie Williams at the grocery store, the doctor did not bat an eyelash, he thought David was simply referring to a friend of his. David's parents had to explain to the doctor that this was a famous singer from the UK and definitely NOT someone David would see casually at the grocers in rural New Brunswick! Had his parents not been there to correct the doctor, David likely would have been released, when he was obviously delusional and required treatment.

Kathy----now you got the reason why I am so, shall we say-bothered--by all the foreign physicians coming over tro the US. At least it is "1" of the reasons. I do agree with you about the doc in the ER. That entire incident could have ended so sadly. I shutter at the thought of what could have happened. I am having trouble wrapping my brain around an ER doc who does not understand the language of his patience. That is simply insane to use an improper phrase. But dam that could have ended so badly. So just glad it did not.

I don't really want to get into the whole debate here and Kathy, while I do understand your point and your concern, perhaps the example you gave was not the best illustration. For example an older Canadian doctor might still not be aware of who Robbie Williams is...but yes, this was a foreign doctor...perhaps had David said that he saw Haile Selassie the doctor would have reacted the way one would expect. Please don't misunderstand me. It is certainly true that an important point was missed by the foreign doctor but all I'm saying is that, in that particular case, it might have happened to a Canadian doctor too, even though that is a less likely scenario. Or perhaps if he said to a Canadian doctor that he saw Haile Selassie, or Mobutu perhaps the result would have been the same.

Herc, sorry, not to be a pest or anything, especially since you're clearly passionate about the proper use of the English language, but you do mean patients as opposed to "patience", right?

I just have to say this, because it is amusing to no end for me... hehe..

Where do all the Canadian doctors go? The US.. there's ya foreigners for ya!!

*sorry just had to!*

This is no slight against you Herc at all, so please don't take it that way, but I just wish this thread and others like it weren't here at all. It's my own fault for coming in here when I obviously can't handle it... but I don't understand why people want to debate this stuff. I've never been a fan of debating, I don't see the point. Everyone has their beliefs why can't it be left at that. Everyone who's commented in this thread is someone I respect, and debating just makes people upset with each other, think less of each other in some cases. I don't want to feel upset with anyone here. I'm sure I'm going to hear "Oh Evie you're so wrong, you're missing the point" or be told to just stay out of the threads but I honestly don't see the point other than to make people fight each other, and I personally don't need anymore excuses to argue and judge others than I already have. I'm already an expert at that.
